As I said earlier in the thread, this is top 3 JNH for me, and in my top 50 overall soundtrack list. I saw the film once, several years ago, and it didn't match the subdued grandeur of the soundtrack, of course, but it was still pretty good. A lot down to Richardson's gorgeous cinematography.
Thanks for this, Howard, if for no other reason than to show to anyone who complains that the chirping on this board is any worse now than it used to be
LOL good one, Mike. Too bad we can't just merge them. Multiple threads sometimes makes it hard to decipher which one to respond to. Unless you're Sartoris and the subject's Laurence Rosenthal.
The positive side of FSM! Thanks to this thread it has highlighted a score that sounds like my cup of tea so bought it off of EBay for £6. It arrived yesterday. Looking forward to hearing what you have been discussing.
SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS is a wonderful score, I listened to it the other day. The starting point of inspiration was clearly the music of Arvo Pärt, compositions like Fratres or Tabula Rasa seemed to have been the blueprint for the score.
Hey Nic, it was really neat just now going back to the 2016 comments in the old thread and realizing my reaction to the “discovery” of this 1999 film and score is akin to the early days of watching TV and discovering Golden Age ones. As such, I think your comment on influential sources applies to those inside film music, in a similar vein, as well as outside.
