SEASON 1:
A short-lived western TV series from 1965. Features a bland annoying theme song about the lead. I kind of hope there's a rejected theme by Stevens or Goldsmith to be unearthed. "The Solid Gold Girl" (1.1) By: Morton Stevens This is the only episode Stevens scored. As I stated in my "TV Series Scoring Threads/Suggestions thread", here: https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?forumID=1&pageID=9&threadID=142699&archive=0 When I premiered the suite: "Destry" Composer: Morton Stevens https://youtube.com/watch?v=KZg2RnqlZ1g Stevens is only credited for the first aired episode, but the producers must have liked his score and they tracked it into all episodes that didn't have a credited composer. The IMDb credits are complete and accurate (three by Goldsmith and one by Mockridge). So, I went threw the series and found cleaner or clean parts of tracked cues and pasted them over the bad sections. One thing became apparent while working this score: this is hands down the worst in-episode tracking of a supposed original score I have ever heard. I've never encountered anything this bad before. The entire approximate three opening is 99.9% a track job of cues throughout the episode, except one little bit which I couldn't otherwise salvage, so I left as is. Score from the episode is tracked and edited up here and there, almost no cues appear to be presented as recorded (some are never heard in full even when tracked bits are used), and scene appear to have been re-edited after-the-fact, cutting in cues during a score cue (I tried to fix this best I could). Even track-job episodes feature score obviously by Stevens, but dropped from the episode. I could only salvage pieces of these un-used cues. This was a massive time-consuming deal. I hope people enjoy.

Is it possible Stevens just wrote a music library (not to picture) for the series to track in? Maybe there wasn’t time or acceptable scheduling in order for him to write original music to picture, and he had to do something similar to what Arthur Morton did on Black Saddle season 2 a few years before… Yavar

Continuing SEASON 1:
"Destry Had a Little Lamb" (1.2) By: Jerry Goldsmith https://ok.ru/video/4951275932363 Highlights: 2:13 in. First original cue of the episode.^ 4:05 in.^ 7:14 in. Bouncy work staccato brass and percussion leading.^ 16:49 in.^ 19:24 in.^ 22:19 in.^ 24:10 in. 26:32 in. 29:59 in.^ 32:07 in. And the acoustic guitar and woodwind cue after the commercial break.^ 37:50 in. Low ominous timpani work opens this short cue. 41:29 in. 43:40 in.^ 48:40 in.^ A good score. Amongst Jerry's best work for episodic television. 0:00 in: tracked Stevens. (Note to Me: 4:59, 50:14) Destry: "You know, I talk better on a full stomach." Destry: "How did you manage to get so dumb in a such a small number of years?"

Continuing SEASON 1:
"Law and Order Day" (1.3) By: Jerry Goldsmith https://ok.ru/video/1795223128673 Alternative link: https://ok.ru/video/4951276260043 Highlights: 4:17 in.^ 5:52/7:46 in. Odd circus-like theme, even with pipe organ. Delightful though.^ 9:19/12:07 in. The above theme is twisted around in various ways and orchestration.^ 14:10 in.^ 16:39 in.^ 17:42 in.^ 19:21 in.^ 22:53 in.^ 24:12 in.^ 25:21 in.^ 26:09 in.^ 27:37 in.^ 29:50 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 31:20 in.^ 33:39 in.^ 37:05 in. And more of that circus theme after the commercial break.^ 41:14 in.^ 43:14 in. This theme, heard before, represents what I think would have been a main theme for the show, had Jerry done one.^ 44:19 in.^ 49:11 in.^ Also amongst his best work for episodic television; I would say his best score for the series and maybe one of his best western TV episode scores. I think I cited all but one cue; I think the entire score should be released. Even the event music at 46:19/48:39 in is enjoyable. This episode dumps the Stevens edit-job of scoring that comprises the pre-credits montage about the show's general plot. EDIT: The pre-credits montage is special for this episode. Yes, it's an edit job of scoring from all three episodes Jerry did, including one cues sped up, but it has two important things in it: an entirely dropped cue, which is then skillfully crossfaded into the an alternate opening. The final cue of the episode where the old lady is leaving by train, features that circus organ opening the cue, here we hear the original opening done on trumpet. I think the new opening is an insert, as the rest of the cue sounds identical.

Features a bland annoying theme song about the lead. I kind of hope there's a rejected theme by Stevens or Goldsmith to be unearthed. I quite agree and share your hope. It's bizarre really that someone had Jerry freakin' Goldsmith score a whopping THREE full episodes of this THIRTEEN episode TV series... the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th episodes of the series (while the two other composers to score the series only did one each) but not write the main theme? Like... why not do what Dr. Kildare and Cain's Hundred did, and have him score 3-4 episodes AND write the main theme while he's at it? Would it have been that much more expensive to have him pen a theme in addition to the much more time consuming work of scoring three hourlong shows? Just mystifying. And hopefully an album of music for this series comes out with some good liner notes to explain what happened. And if you're not going to have Jerry Goldsmith write the theme, at least have Morton Stevens write it!! He hadn't done Hawaii 5-0 yet so maybe he didn't have as much cache as he would later, but he'd still penned multiple excellent TV series themes. "The Solid Gold Girl" (1.1) By: Morton Stevens https://youtube.com/watch?v=KZg2RnqlZ1g Enjoyed your suite! Thanks for painstakingly putting it together using later tracked cues in the series. I imagine that was a lot of work but it does give a good sense of Stevens's music for the show. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was a music library, but it's still nice music. I'm guessing what's heard most clearly at 9:14-9:53 of your suite (plus earlier several times in different variations...and later heard again briefly at 11:02, 12:08, 12:38, 15:00) is the Morton Stevens theme for the title character. I can easily imagine it arranged more stridently for a nice main title. I especially like the solo guitar rendition. I bet if tapes for the series scoring still exist and we get an album with all the Goldsmith and as much Stevens/Mockridge as may fit, we'll discover there was originally an instrumental main title for the series that got replaced by some dumb producer who thought the show needed a song. As for the Goldsmith scores for this series... they are certainly quite enjoyable to me (a little moreso than the Morton Stevens suite of cues you shared, perhaps), and would no doubt shine better on an album release in much better sound quality and free of all the dialogue and FX. That said, I think saying they're among Jerry's very best TV scoring (or even best western TV scoring) is a *bit* of a stretch. I love some of Jerry's Gunsmokes and (especially) "Incident in the Middle of Nowhere" (from Rawhide) much more than any of his Destry scores. But again, hard to do a really fair judgement of the work until a commercial score album can be produced... and I have high hopes of that happening now that La-La Land and Mike Matessino have gotten into Revue/Universal TV. We know that short-lived TV series are far easier to produce soundtrack albums for compared with long-lived TV series with many more countless tape reels to transfer... so this short western series with three Goldsmith scores, a Morton Stevens, and a Cyril Mockridge kinda seems like a no-brainer! Continuing SEASON 1:
"Stormy Is a Lady" (1.4) By: Jerry Goldsmith https://ok.ru/video/4951276718795 https://ok.ru/video/1795223194209 Highlights: 4:00 in. 4:52 in.^ 11:32 in.^ 19:27 in. 20:39 in.^ 27:19 in.^ 31:23 in.^ 38:39 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 39:04 in.^ 44:31 in.^ 46:37 in.^ 49:53 in.^ Looking over his IMDb credits, these three episodes Jerry scored, appear to be the only times director Gene Nelson worked with him. But boy howdy did Gene get to work with cream of the composer crop throughout his television directing days. (NtM: 13:12)

Since you didn’t comment much about it, does that mean this one is your least favorite of the three Goldsmith scores for this series (since you singled out the previous two for specific praise)? Yavar

Yes, your speculation is correct. Doesn't mean it's a bad score, it's just not up there with the first two. And I agree with you -- this would make a good set of scoring for release.

Looking forward to hearing what you think of the Cyril Mockridge score! (That’s the last original music written for the series to your knowledge, right?) Yavar

Yes, final original score of the series. Based upon going threw the rest to make the Stevens suite, I firmly believe the rest are edited track jobs and there are no uncredited efforts.

Finishing SEASON 1:
"The Nicest Girl in Gomorrah" (1.5) By: Cyril J. Mockridge https://ok.ru/video/1795223259745 Alternative link: https://ok.ru/video/4951276784331 This is the only effort by Mockridge for the series. Highlights: 9:19 in. I think the end is Stevens.^ 17:49 in.^ 19:10 in.^ 20:53 in.^ 22:53 in.^ 29:15 in.^ 34:34 in. 46:10/47:20 in.^ 48:22 in. I'd say this is about on par with the Stevens effort. Jerry was clearly the best contributor of the series. 2:35 in: pretty sure that's Morton Stevens. 32:58 in: pretty sure that's Stevens. (NtM: 25:27) And that was that for original scores. Even though there were thirteen episodes, as you can see above, only the first five were scored. They edited up and tracked those scores throughout, with some additional unidentified material here and there.

ADDITIONAL, UNCREDITED, STOCK MUSIC COMPOSERS:
Culled from ASCAP and BMI, though both sites just duplicate the same composers. In no particular order: Lennie Hayton. Frederick Herbert. (listed with Stevens) Elmer Bernstein. Eddie Frazier. (listed with Herbert) Gus Levene. Sidney Fine. Lyn Murray. Richard Shores. Stanley Wilson. Arnold Schwarzwald. (listed witrh Herbert) What I suspect with Stevens, Herbert, Frazier, and Schwarzwald: a mixture of orchestra jam-like sessions and musician soloists (like the multiple involved bassoon solos). Stevens probably laid out the themes and ideas, what he was aiming for, and they took off with them. This actually happened more often than you might think. I've read things here and there over the years. The following composers supposedly did an uncredited score on the 1954 film "Destry". I cannot rule out tracking from the film. Henry Mancini. Frank Skinner. Herman Stein. As usual, there has been, of course, no release of the show's scoring. No known promos either. Other Threads I Have Created or Commented in About TV Scores:

Looking forward to Dundee and the Culhane and Bracken's World next! (I'd noticed the latter became available in complete form online so thought you might end up tackling it.) I grew up with the 1954 Destry (starring the underrated Audie Murphy) and know the score decently well, so I'll watch the whole 60s Destry series at some point and see if I recognize any cues from it.
