I'll be flying out to Los Angeles on Thursday, July 6th, and remain in town for three weeks, culminating on July 27th when I return home to Philly. I'll be at The Bowl on Saturday evening, July 8th, for the John Williams concert. Hope to see many old friends while I'm out there.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY!
Now I have FIVE Indiana Jones movies to love... I don't mind saying it... "I'm on Cloud Nine this week!"
I absolutely love these movies... I first saw Raiders of the Lost Ark 42 years ago in 1981 when I was 14 years old...
And I never dreamed back then that 42 years later, I would be experiencing a FIFTH installment, with Harrison Ford STILL starring, Lucas and Spielberg STILL executive producing, and John Williams STILL composing... Yet, here we are... What a ride it's been!

The Dial of Destiny was AMAZING... Very exciting, thrilling, original, and quite touching and moving as well...
Harrison Ford was BRILLIANT (as always!)... It was a more than fitting send-off for our favorite whip-cracking archeologist...
Not only was it a thrilling rollercoaster ride of a movie (expertly directed by James Mangold) with some great new characters (Phoebe Waller-Bridge was great as Helena), incredible visuals and locations, amazing action sequences, a terrific "McGuffin", a wildly over-the-top "bonkers" ending (which I loved!), but it was also a very poignant, introspective reflection of Indiana Jones himself, his place in history, and how it has defined him... The movie had incredible emotional weight and HEART... I loved that.

I got all "choked-up and teary-eyed" four times...
Sallah begging Indy to let him go with him on one last adventure, and Indy telling his friend to stay,
Indy lamenting the death of his son Mutt,
Indy expressing his awe at seeing history unfolding before his very eyes at the end,
Indy and Marion reuniting...
"WOW".
Yes, I got "emotional" in an Indiana Jones movie... And it felt GREAT!

The John Williams soundtrack is absolutely FANTASTIC, as well... I can't stop listening to it!
I think that it is one of his very best scores... And that's quite a compliment, considering his stellar track record!
At 91 years young, John Williams STILL proves to the world that he is INDEED the greatest film composer of ALL TIME!

Anyway, I had a blast with this film... It was terrific, and a more than worthy entry to this series...
At this moment, having only seen DOD once, I would rank and rate the series like this:

#1 - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK ........................(10/10)
#2 - THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.................................(10/10)
#3 - THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.....(10/10)
#4 - THE LAST CRUSADE......................................(10/10)
#5 - THE DIAL OF DESTINY....................................(10/10)

I can't help but give them ALL a 10/10, because I love them all so much.. .

ROTLA and TOD are both on my "Top 10 Greatest Films of All Time" list...
These first two films are PERFECT... They have been, are, and always will be the BEST Indiana Jones movies..
Nothing can touch these two CLASSICS...

And TLC, KOTCS, and DOD are not too far behind!...
(And "YES", you read correctly... I ranked KOTCS at #3... I absolutely adore KOTCS... It does not deserve the hate that it gets!).

However, in the end, I did put DOD last on my list at #5, only because my love of the four Classic films from Lucas and Spielberg knows no end... They are ALL that special to me... But I do love all five equally for different reasons...

And who knows... maybe after seeing DOD as many times as I've seen the other four,
I could possibly see myself bumping it up a notch!

I will close by urging EVERYONE to go see this movie... It is AMAZING!

Lastly:
This week, I witnessed something that sadly just does not exist anymore in cinema...

I saw an epic Hollywood film, featuring an iconic Hollywood movie character created by a living Hollywood legend, George Lucas...

I saw an epic Hollywood film, executive produced by two living Hollywood legends, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg...

I saw an epic Hollywood film, starring a living Hollywood legend, Harrison Ford,

I saw an epic Hollywood film, composed by a living Hollywood legend, John Williams...

Everyone out there... Cherish this moment... Do not let it pass you by...
Just like what happened to Indy at the end of this film, we are witnessing history here...
It will never come again...

There are large parts of this film that feel not new or modern, and I mean that in a good way. It felt comfortable and old, and that is a compliment, it has rough edges and it is certainly too long, but I found it quite reassuring in a way. I rank it 3rd, behind the first film and Last Crusade.

Great review. I agree with most of it, but that doesn’t matter. Everyone gets to have an opinion. People definitely need to lighten up and let themselves have a good time. Cinema, and tv for that matter, lost something a while back when everything got so serious, tried to be “grounded” and “real” instead of just trying to entertain. You can be those things and be entertaining, but the trying so hard has made cinema and tv depressing and unenjoyable. This film was entertaining and exciting, and it reminded me of the old serials which is what this series was meant to be. A great ending to a great franchise story. To everyone else, I’ll quote Stripes, “Lighten up Francis!”

A delight and a chance to hear one more time (especially in the end credits) an echo of a sound akin to the movie palace music of Max Steiner and Alfred Newman with soaring melodies, great action cues and a classical orchestral core that John Williams provides with such glee and style. If this is his last film score, it would be a beautiful finale.

I went to see the film a second time with my little brother yesterday in Santa Monica, and we both loved it even more than the first time. Everyone in the theater had a wonderful time. Everyone laughed at the right time, cheered at the right time, thrilled at the right time, and applauded at the right time. I just don't get the negativity. This is the very best "Indiana Jones" picture since "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It's the film that I've been waiting these many decades to see. It's perfection. It has everything in it that made the original movies so iconic and joyous. I absolutely adore this movie.

That’s wonderful. I also hear from people who enjoy repeated viewings because the movie is the kind of entertainment that is called old-fashioned these days.

If M:I did not open next week it would likely earn its money with „legs“ over the coming weeks. But the diminishing number of screens will be a problem.

Nevertheless, the movie is there, and why should any of us care about box office numbers if we enjoy the film?

Why? Just don't feed the trolls seeking to capsize threads. Ignore them. Is that so hard?

My only reservation about this thread is that it's a movie review and belongs on the other side of the board.

I simply don't understand how this film could have been a failure at the box office or how John Williams' representation would have allowed a contractual agreement for a CD release to have been so woefully disregarded. Disney's disrespect for a cultural icon is beyond shameful. Surely, whether the film had been financially successful or not, someone in their vast marketing department, should have understood that there remains a demand for the recorded works of John Williams, particularly since this may well be his final film score.

It will surely be discussed at length but I think Deadline Hollywood was right: Indy is a played-out franchise that Disney mistakenly believed still had broad appeal. The last Indy film came out 15 years ago. The previous one 20 years before that. That's not a franchise with currency among the largest number of moviegoers who are under 30. I know a college professor who told me that she wanted to explain a physics problem by referencing Indy and the rolling boulder and NO ONE in the class had seen the Raiders. They think of Indy like Zorro: an old-style hero from Hollywood's past. He's important to many on this board but time marches on and audiences find new heroes.

Surely, whether the film had been financially successful or not, someone in their vast marketing department, should have understood that there remains a demand for the recorded works of John Williams, particularly since this may well be his final film score.

Agreed. I'd point out that Disney has the means to reissue this "limited" release on CD at any time and that a polite and enthusiastic request would be far more convincing to Disney's music executives than the outrage expressed by others on this board. Take this as evidence that the CD format is essentially over: even the classical labels are keeping CD runs frustratingly small for those of us who still love the format.

But the last Indy film was still made "in the modern era" (around the time of the dawn of the MCU), *and* it became the highest grossing of the entire franchise, despite the immediately mixed (to be generous) reaction to it from both critics and general audiences! Why did Indiana Jones *not* lose relevancy and turn out to be a "played-out franchise" in 2008, when even more time had passed between then and the previous entry in the franchise? I for one don't think Disney was all that crazy to believe there was still life in the franchise, based on the fact that the most recent entry had done even better at the box office (by like $100,000,000!) than the original masterpiece Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Yeah, but sometimes old heroes come back to great success! You yourself brought up Zorro. Well in 1998 Zorro was a big hit again, thanks to The Mask of Zorro (we'll leave out discussion of the disappointing 2005 sequel to that)! The last time that character (born during the silent era of film, and memorably played on screen by Douglas Fairbanks) had been a big hit was in the late 50s thanks to Disney's Guy Williams incarnation. 40 years passed between then and the film with Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas. And there are other interesting parallels with Indiana Jones too -- the film after all starts with a prequel action sequence depicting a younger version of the original Zorro on an adventure, before jumping ahead in time significantly to the point where he's an old man! And then (while still having a decent amount of action to himself) the original hero basically becomes a mentor figure to a younger lead. Indiana Jones kinda did the same thing *twice*, with both Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny. One of those became the highest grossing film in the franchise and the other became the lowest grossing.

Batman's another example of a character that has successfully been revived many times. In 1989 many people still had in mind the campy Adam West version of Batman from 1960s TV and film. Burton's film made the character popular and relevant again in a way that surprised many.

Surely, whether the film had been financially successful or not, someone in their vast marketing department, should have understood that there remains a demand for the recorded works of John Williams, particularly since this may well be his final film score.

Agreed. My fingers are crossed still for Mike Matessino treatment being given to all five excellent Indiana Jones scores by Williams... on CD, of course.

Yavar
