Vol. 5 of the 1701 Collection focuses on the Trek TOS music of renowned composer George Duning, with the “Star Trek Theme” by Alexander Courage, and contains original music from the classic episodes METAMORPHOSIS, RETURN TO TOMORROW, PATTERNS OF FORCE, IS THERE IN TRUTH NO BEAUTY? and THE EMPATH, along with MAIN and END TITLES.

This means that Duning's AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD will be pushed to the final volume along with THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES by Fielding & Samuel Matlovsky's I, MUDD (plus a grab bag of assorted other items such as Wilbur Hatch's music for Abraham Lincoln from THE SAVAGE CURTAIN).

Wow, we’re almost done with the collection. I was hoping they could pull a miracle late in the game and get licensing for the remaining music from the box set. But I guess not.

I wonder why library music based on the GNP-controlled scores has been left out though? At least on quick glance, one would think their ownership would consist of the actual recordings of those scores themselves, so does their copyright claim extend as far as the written score material then? What sort of legal details are involved with this?

It’s a shame they didn’t release it in two disc sets originally instead of a super expensive $250 dollar box set. But I’m glad for a second chance to get most of the music. But it will always irk me the 1701 series is incomplete.

I hate to say this but you had a LONG time to get the big set when it was available. It sold out but not right away. If you wanted everything you wouldve gotten everything while it was available. Believe me I know how you feel but…this is what happens when folks wait on things.

I understand there was plenty of time to get it, IF you could afford it. But some of us can’t put out that much all at once, or simply weren’t able to financially afford it at the time.

I guess you could argue I could have saved $25 dollars a month until I had enough money, but I wasn’t forward thinking.

A $30 dollar set every few months is just more doable. As I said I’m happy to get a second chance on the 1701 series even if it’s not everything.
I hope it’s selling well for them.

At the same time, getting everything (except a couple of cues released later) all at once was exactly what I wanted. It was one of those purchases that was so important that I saved and even sold a bunch of CDs back to SAE just to help pay for it. I was lucky to be able to do it, as I was rarely in a position to make a lump purchase like that. But considering the importance of it to me and the significance the music held during my lifetime, I was gonna buy it no matter what. The box is THE Holy Grail in my music library.

I'm grateful that everyone who missed it has another opportunity to get the majority of the music on disc. I hope GNP at some point releases the scores being held back. They're important in the context of the series.

I scored the 15 CD set on ebay tonight for under $400, and I'm tickled pink as I missed it the first go. Patience is a virtue smile

Right. I also was in no position financially at the time to get it. But it was one of those things I did and damn the consequences because it was a no brainer of a holy grail. The set was available for at least a couple of years. So folks had plenty of time to grab it even if you saved 20 bucks a month for it.

But its got everything and everything was very much appreciated too!

I didn't have the funds when it was released and nor at any moment whilst the box was available and not now. Even financing the individual sets every few months is not easy but I'm doing it. One would think in forty non stop years of working, one would be in a better position but the opposite is the case. Cost of living and supporting one's family, which of course will always come first, as it should.

Maybe once the 1701 series goes out of print I can sell my copies for inflated prices and make enough back to buy the box set at an inflated price? big grin

I hope GNP at some point releases the scores being held back. They're important in the context of the series.

It would also be great if they could release remastered version of the Voyager and DS9 pilot scores and for their Next Generation scores, especially their Vol. 3

They did a great job with the new edition of the Farpoint CD and the "Arsenal of Freedom" bonus score.
