I have the superb 50-minute score program that he prepared for BATMAN & ROBIN, and it's a scandal that this was never released to the public. Hopefully some day!

It's a crime to music that Batman & Robin has never had a legit release. I wonder if things would be different had the soundtrack album actually had a suite from the movie instead of a medley of cues from Forever. I know Watertower is weird as far as having first priority of initial score releases (or that they used to; Lethal Weapon 4 was premiered by LLL). Funny enough, that track was the first time I heard Goldenthal's score outside the movie.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that his score to Batman & Robin can get the same treatment as David Arnold's to Godzilla via BSX: 2 CDs for the complete score and a third for the proposed album. Or even "just" the 50 minute version.

WB + Goldenthal = no cd for you

I'm not sufficently familiar with Toto's Dune, but I highly doubt it. This is the first time I hear it mentioned and Goldenthal's theme doesn't really sound like something else i'm familiar with. Do you have a source? Has this ever been discussed before? Possible temp track if so?

If there is a theme that is similar to Dune, it is the one composed by Danny Elfman for the film Scrooged...

And yes, Batman & Robin needs a legitimate CD release, and it's a true crime that it does not exist...

As much as I like Goldenthal, he comes a bit down on my top BATMAN scores. Both movies themselves are hard too watch and for me they are embarassing in a way.

1.BATMAN Danny Elfman
2.BATMAN RETURNS Danny Elfman
3.THE BATMAN Michael Giacchino
4.BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM Shirley Walker
5.BATMAN BEGINS Zimmer/ Newton
6.BATMAN FOREVER Elliot Goldenthal
7.BATMAN and ROBIN Elliot Goldenthal
8.THE DARK KNIGHT Zimmer
9.THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Zimmer
10.BATMAN Nelson Riddle

The resemblence to DUNE is totally OFF though in my opinion.

Goldenthal's two scores come after Elfman's and Phantasm but way above the rest. I prefer some showbiz sound in there, even if Goldenthal's sometimes reflect his director's excesses

Obviously Hefti/Riddle have a special place too way above the rest. But Elfman is the one who nails it best.

Yes, yes, Soup Nazi, we all know the deal. You're not dropping truth bombs by any means.

That doesn't change the fact that the expansion happened after the lawsuit went down. It makes the whole situation even more confusing

People don't understand how deals work it seems.

LLL had the deal already done. They had a legal contract before the lawsuit and the work was done. WB could not stop it from happening.

The lawsuit between WB and Goldenthal would only affect future deals. Unless some serious turnover happens at WB, you won't be seeing any more releases from their catalog of Goldenthal's work.

Luckily, there are unmentionables available of Sphere, Interview with the Vampire, Batman & Robin, so if you really want them, you just need to know where to look.

Probably the most prominent homage to the Dune theme is in Tom Holkenborg's Mortal Engines score, especially in the cues "I am the Meteor" and "Weapon of the Ancients"

It’s not remotely close except that it shares a i-vi chord progression. And that it has a rising and falling melodic arc… it’s like saying mailer’s 5th opening is exactly like Beethoven’s fifth because they both have 4 note introductory figures….

Norman Mailer's 5th? wink

(I know you meant Mahler, of course.)

Or maybe not everyone knew the pertinent info? Assuming all are in the know is a mistake. It's not like this was broadcast on the news. I hadn't heard this aspect until just now.

Yikes, I wasn't trying to be mean or start a fight or anything. Just saying a legit release seems unlikely. Believe me, I ran a Goldenthal site back in the 90s geocities day, I'd love more Goldenthal in any form.
