Hurray!…A new SAW score! .. Who the hell cares I hear most of you probably saying. …Well they’re might be a couple of you out there so I’m going to waffle on anyway!
Im a big horror film fan but not necessarily a big gore-hound, yet there’s something about the SAW films that always got me. Maybe the inventive touches in some of the traps or the twisted sense of justice that flashes up occasionally..not sure. Anyway, Charlie’s the voice of this long running franchise and no matter how the films are, he’s always out there giving it 110% with his scores. But they’re all the same i hear you say….well…yes and no. They’re the same as say a composer like Mark Snow’s brilliant music for his TV series like The X-Files or Millennium. The music has the same style throughout but we all want those individual episode scores for the differences we love. The new SAW score still gives us Charlie’s great style but this one is definitely a bit less ‘in your face’ for a lot of it. In fact there’s some nice quieter moments that wouldn’t be out of place in many a character drama film. He also still brings little touches that still make each score interesting. In this a solo voice appears which I think is a first in the series and there’s a bit more of an orchestral push towards the end in a couple of tracks.
I haven’t seen the film yet but its getting very positive reviews which is no mean feat for a film thats number 10 in the series! This might be one of my favourite scores out of the whole series and while its not pushing the violent element as much musically as say one of my favourite tracks in the series from SAW III ‘ Pig Juicer’ ( gotta love that title!!) there’s still those great brutal musical moments hear to keep you going.
Have I sold it to you? ….No?….. Ach well……… Away an’ boil yer heid!! big grin

I'm endlessly fascinated by the SAW films, and the mythology they've drawn up over the years, so I no doubt am going to see this one too.

I remember a thread awhile back (maybe by you, spook?) where someone laid out Clouser's musical work in detail, across the series. I was impressed, and it made me listen with more attention the subsequent times I saw the films. I'm not a horror music buff at all (stingers and tenuto strings and stuff aren't my cuppa tea as far as a listening experience is concerned, at least not most of the times), BUT....I'm willing to give this a chance if anyone created a 40-50 minute playlist containing the highlights from the films (preferably the more melodic parts; that aren't too aggressive on the ears). Anyone willing to give it a shot?

"Away an’ boil yer heid!!"

Now that seems an appropriate track title for this franchise!

I did! I also don't gravitate towards the abrasive parts of Clouser's scores (and they're kind of the majority), but I always find a few more accessible yet unforgiving cues to enjoy in his Saw scores (Spiral being my favorite). And of course, the "Hello Zepp" main theme is absolutely iconic, and I always love hearing now variations on it, even when they're quite subtle variations.

So here's my playlist, though note that it includes all 10 versions of the "Hello Zepp" theme, so you might want to remove a few if that theme overstays its welcome:

Saw:
Hello Zepp
Zepp Overture

Saw II:
Wilson Steel
I've played before
Hello, Eric

Saw III:
Prep
Shithole
Final Test

Saw IV:
Help Them
Let Go
Just Begun

Saw V:
Zepp Five

Saw VI:
Zepp Six 1

Saw 3D:
Swat Teeth
The Final Zepp

Jigsaw:
Shotgun
Zepp Eight

Spiral:
You OK?
Glass Thrower
Zepp Nine

Saw X:
Abandoned
Zepp X

The Zepp theme is an earworm. Never listen to this before going to bed, because you won't sleep !

This is a surprisingly good listen at 80 mins. Clouser has somehow maintained his enthusiasm for these movies and has fashioned a sleek, refined and effective score for this 10th-ish film!

By the way,I can't help but think about the Zepp theme each time I listen to the Skyfall track : "She's mine". Here's the link : https://youtu.be/5L7LMu2EoI8?t=152

There's also a track from THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE by Dominic Lewis which has some parts (several places) and specifically from 2:20 which reminds me of SAW big grin

Good to read the comments folks and nice list on that compilation luquet3.
There was the two anthology volumes that came out but there wasn’t much of the quieter moments in them. I reckon the new one might be what you’re looking for Thor as its a good balance of the quiet stuff with the….. ‘Sawy’ bits! big grin

That track right into Zepp X is a truly euphoric experience. Charlie knocked this score out of the park.

Just came back from the film tonight. How great was that!! Admittedly if you’re not a fan of these films its not going to change your mind, but if you are…what a great sequel. Who’d have thought ‘10’ was the charm! Charlie’s score was really first rate in this and i haven’t been so amped up during a film’s climax in a cinema for ages!

Really liked this score.
Several melodic passages, some of the piano writting have a Christopher Young vibe, the action/horror parts are not so harsh (and build some momentum with interesting rithms) and the final tracks are particurarly good.

I've checked out of this series after Part 4, but maybe I should give a chance to part X.

Really enjoyed this score! Some great action/suspense stuff. Like classic SAW, but even more interesting.
Some nice longer tracks which gives time to build and end in totalt chaos!! I specially liked the tracks "Abandoned", "Hello Diego", "Skylight", "Hello Valentina" and "Blood Board". All the "Zepp"s are always amazing, but they all kinda sound the same as well. (my favorite Zepps is nr 6 and 8)

The emotional tracks were a bit slow for me, but I'm sure I just need to listen to them a bit more.
"What Happens" is beautiful though! Also among my favorites from X!
