Jerry Goldsmith: a goldsmith in Hollywood

Total Trax, the film music podcast founded by Rafik Djoumi, Olivier Desbrosses and David Oghia (Misteur D), is proud to present their first book, dedicated to the great Jerry Goldsmith, unforgettable composer of music for Rambo, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, Gremlins, Poltergeist, Total Recall, Basic Instinct and many others.
Jerry Goldsmith: un orfèvre à Hollywood, written by Yves Desrichard, with the collaboration of Rafik Djoumi. Our book looks in detail at his biography, his influences, his musical masters, his years in television, his special relationships with certain filmmakers, and the evolution of his compositional style.
We also offer a second book, Jerry Goldsmith, Visual Filmography, in English and French, which allows you to explore the master's career through the visuals of his records.
We need you, our Beings of Light, to bring these two books to life! We look forward to seeing you in Paris on Saturday, March 23, for the book launch and the screening of Star Trek le film in your company.

Jerry Goldsmith

With a career spanning five decades, including countless popular and revered films (Planet of the Apes, Patton, Papillon, Chinatown, Star Trek, Rambo, Gremlins, Basic Instinct, Total Recall etc.) and despite a talent widely recognized by his peers, who continue to cite him as a major reference, no book in French had until now been dedicated to the great Jerry Goldsmith.
Film music is always dependent on the works it serves. Thus, the most sublime of scores can fade into oblivion if the film it serves is not favored by the public. Jerry Goldsmith's career has alternated between acclaimed films, despised films, rediscovered films and forgotten films, while the artist always gave his best. As a result, many of his great scores remain little-known, even among film buffs. Rediscovering the incredible richness of his career is the aim of this book, which will be published in 2024, the 20th anniversary of his death.

The fruit of patient research and cross-referencing of information, Jerry Goldsmith: un orfèvre à Hollywood retraces the Maestro's career on all his projects, without exception, with a wealth of anecdotes and analysis, over almost 450 pages. This book will enable all fans to appreciate even more the consistency, diversity and modernity of this giant of film music.

Total Trax

Total Trax is THE French-language podcast devoted to film music and its relationship to images. A podcast like no other, hosted by a trio of die-hard enthusiasts: Rafik Djoumi (BiTS, Capture Mag, Arrêt sur Images, Mad Movies), Olivier Desbrosses (UnderScores, La Grande Évasion) and David Oghia aka Misteur D (Agence Tous Geeks, Le Rayon Bleu). Total Trax was created in 2019 to share with ever-renewed enthusiasm our passion for this very specific yet universal musical genre. To evoke both the great music that has marked the history of cinema and more confidential scores, little-known or forgotten by the general public. To bring music for pictures out of the shadows, and the immense talent that has nurtured it for almost a century.

The project

Today, we invite you to support our first publishing project. Written by Jerry Goldsmith specialist Yves Desrichard (among others), this book reviews the composer's biography, his influences, his musical masters, his years in television, his special relationships with certain filmmakers and the evolution of his compositional style. A detailed approach that leaves none of the Maestro's works untouched.

This project marks a new stage for Total Trax: beyond the podcast, we want to extend with you our exploration of the worlds of film music in other media. Jerry Goldsmith: A Goldsmith in Hollywood could become the first book of a future Total Trax label. Reserve your copy and help us write a new chapter in our shared adventures.

Counterparts

Alongside this beautiful 450-page, 18x26 softcover book, we've also designed a second 200-page book in the same format, in French and English, Jerry Goldsmith, Visual Filmography, for the collector in you. This graphic and evocative book reviews Jerry Goldsmith's career, bringing together the visuals of his soundtracks for film and television.

You can also support us by pre-ordering the original t-shirts we've designed for you, as well as the visual designed for the book in poster form.

The KissKissBankBank campaign runs until December 2. Delivery to contributors will take place between late March and early April 2024. We're even looking forward to seeing you in Paris on Saturday, March 23, 2024 for an exceptional evening to launch the book, with a screening of Star Trek le film (1979), one of Goldsmith's most memorable compositions for cinema.

If you support this first project, there'll be more to come: we're not short of ideas for film music, either in terms of genre or composer. Now it's your turn!

N.B: Please note that I am not responsible of this crowdfunding campaign or any of its elements. Just a supporter.
I've just been asked by french author Yves Desrichard, with whom I am in touch, to share as widely as possible all the informations surrounding this project.

Thanks to all for your visit and interest.

Until there is an English version it's rather pointless.

I guess if I ever write my book, it should be in Czech? No way.

Looks lovely, but I am extremely skeptical of this claim: “A detailed approach that leaves none of the Maestro's works untouched.”

After almost six years of researching and working on a podcast dedicated to Goldsmith, and uncovering quite a few early gems of his of which most people were unaware, I don’t think we will ever even know the TITLES of all his early works for TV/radio, much less actually find them (in written or video form).

So… marketing hyperbole, I guess…

The fifty millionth Goldsmith book to rehash all the things we've heard before and/or read off the internet, and get details and facts wrong or half-assed. That's what it'll be.

Until there is an English version it's rather pointless.

I've been told that an english version might see the light of day if the french original edition first makes it and gets unexpected over success. Wait and see what happens....

Yes, all kidding aside, anytime interest is paid and something like this comes out it is a cause for appreciation from film music appreciators. I seriously doubt it will turn out to be the literary equivalent of a LeRoy Holmes re-recording.

I follow the podcast hosted by the writer and two other cinephile/score lovers.
I have no doubt the book will be full of interesting anecdotes.
If the book is in the same trend as the podcast. it should be worth supporting.
I think the focus will be slightly different than Bond's Goldsmith Companion.

It should be a good complementary book.

And they're definitely planning to produce an English version if they pass their original goal.

I've just been told that the cover artwork preview of the second book, the Visual Filmography, is not definitive AT ALL.
Maybe enough time left to remove that unmentionable SUPERGIRL cover...not to speak about PLANET OF THE APES and FREUD, also non official CD cover artworks, with MULAN and SMALL SOLDIERS also suspects.

Already 214 pre-ordrers of a 300 target (74%).

With 43 days left before the crowdfunding campaign ends, this french book is likely to be released eventually.

I guess that the subscription mode is the way of financing from the future...for such niche market as ours.
This may also include new recordings like Intrada's winners (Herrmann and Goldsmith albums).

What do the French know of ponytails?

They know way much more than you can imagine.
