https://varesesarabande.com/products/david-newman-serenity-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-deluxe-edition-cd Serenity (2005) was the feature film sequel of Joss Whedon’s short-lived space-western TV series, Firefly (2002–03). When fans lamented the loss of the canceled show, Universal rescued the titular spaceship and its charismatic crew (including Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk) for a big-screen adventure written and directed by Whedon. Scoring Serenity was David Newman, whose vast and diverse filmography lent him well-prepared for anything the film might throw at him. From worldbuilding to character comedy to harrowing action, the score runs the gamut—but always hews to a sense of family and “home” for the Serenity and her offbeat crew. Solo cello and folksy percussion are found alongside eerie “ethnic” approaches, which turn dark and brutal for the barbaric villains, the Reavers, as the film explores their secret origin. But Newman balances the weirdness with familiar, dramatic orchestral scoring, ultimately creating an eclectic tapestry for Whedon’s unique vision. Features: Varèse Sarabande’s 2005 soundtrack CD for Serenity was released as a 23-track, 50-minute program. This Deluxe Edition expands the album into a 2CD set, with 54 tracks featuring 90 minutes of prime David Newman sci-fi action, adventure, and emotion, as chronicled in new liner notes by Daniel Schweiger. Excellent. A number of terrific cues in this score. My personal edit of the action music cue that combines part of another cue, is a kick-ass piece and on my exercise CD. I should put my edit up one day so people can hear it (gorram good edit).

That cover is a joke, right? As I said elsewhere it's shit.

Weird and I don’t understand why they did that when the original cover was perfectly good (unlike City Hall — why not redo THAT one, lol?) Heck, I even like their 2017 LP cover better than this weird cartoon thing. On the other hand I do rather like their new cover art for Pleasantville (not that anything was wrong with the original album cover), which IMO is the greater score. Yavar

Yeah, that cover is truly bad. If they wanted a hand-drawn cover, almost any of the covers to the initial run of official comics Whedon wrote-co-wrote for Dark Horse Comics, would have been far superior (if licensing is possible). Granted, they are not the film, but still better. Here are some of them from the first series ("Those Left Behind"): https://firefly.fandom.com/wiki/Serenity:_Those_Left_Behind

Agreed. Good grief. I will be buying this but definitely using a custom cover for iTunes and I won't have to see this one except when I take out the booklet to read the liner notes. It'll just be another spine on a shelf for me, lol... Clearly Varese actually paid an artist to come up with this bizarre thing. Imagine if they had simply paid Jim Titus to do the package design instead (hey, they hired him for the Williams Dracula DE!), using the plethora of available art attached to this film... such a missed opportunity to make this a gorgeous looking package. Ah well. Yavar

It reminds me of "adult" coloring book art. Look it up. Sigh. ""adult" coloring book". Just one more indication that the West is in terminal decline, and we're nearing the drain ever faster.
