"SINATRA: ALL THE WAY" ... A BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE (DECEMBER 12TH, 1915 - MAY 14TH, 1998)

It was twenty five years ago, on the night of May 14th, 1998, that the world and I lost the most beloved entertainer of the twentieth century.

He was my idol, and the most significant cultural influence of my own life and journalistic career. Francis Albert Sinatra would have celebrated his 108th Birthday on December 12th, 2023. I have continued to love him for sixty years.

Sadly, it has been twenty five years since the passing of Frank Sinatra, and May 14th, 2023 marked yet another anniversary commemorating the final "transition" of "The Chairman Of The Board," a conspicuously remarkable artist and human being. William B. Williams assigned that name to Francis Albert Sinatra on his WNEW Radio program over half a century ago, and it stuck.

No performer either before or since has had the cultural impact of Sinatra. Singer, Actor, Director, Dancer, Painter, Producer, and Social Activist, Frank Sinatra remains the single most influential multi media artist in show business history.

On the anniversary of his birth, as well as a loving commemoration of his passage into both history and legend, we take a look back at his remarkable career and celebrate more than one hundred years, as well as one of "The Greatest Stories Ever Told," with this rich, multi-media retrospective and one hundredth birthday celebration of the life and times of Frank Sinatra. Thanks for the memories, Frank. Your voice shall ever live on...with a song in your heart.

Hey, Guys. I realize that this topic doesn't fit precisely into the normal discussions entertained on this forum, but I hope that any Sinatra fans out there might find it of interest or merit. It took me several months to complete, while still working forty hours a week, and I'd like to think that it's, perhaps, the most rewarding accomplishment of my fifty-five year writing career.

Hi Steve,

I saw your post yesterday but didn't have the time then to follow the link ... I've just done so and can say that it does, indeed, look like a sizeable piece of work. I may have some time this evening to start reading. As I've read and watched numerous productions re: Sinatra's colourful life I do wonder if there is anything new to learn; if your retrospective concentrates more on his work (as the images suggest) then all for the good.

I have 1,300 Frank Sinatra recordings in my library (and have watched most of his films); I can't say I play one of his albums every week but did, today, play a collection of his Christmas-themed recordings 1944-54 (i.e. mostly from the Columbia era).

Like you, for me he was the best, rarely bettered in any of his recordings. In the words of George Burns: the only singer in the world who sings like Frank Sinatra.

Sinatra is my all-time favorite. My kids "have to" listen to movie scores or Frank when I drive them to school, and they've both gained a great appreciation for both. My son in fact listens to Sinatra only when he drives; he's learning and it's cool and calming for him. Even my daughter who just became a teenager and is way into Taylor Swift and boy bands tells me that, next to Elvis (who she's loved her whole life), Frank has the best voice. I love the simpler times he represents, the masculine mindset and lifestyle he's associated with (no, it's not sexist like it's been twisted into over the past few years) and how he lived his way. I wear a grey rabbit fur felt fedora to work to honor him and because I love the old-school look. I intend on reading this today. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic work, Steve, thanks for posting it. I've acquired a great deal of Sinatra in my music collection. It's entertainment, it's history now, and it's largely unique.

I'm a big fan of Sinatra the singer/record producer. Often not a week (or even day) goes by when I don't listen to at least one of his albums. A lot of it is so well-done, and a great experience from the first track to the last. The Capitol era is just amazing to consider in how he was producing so many great records one after the other with various different styles of arrangements.

Thank you so much Steve for this incredible Sinatra career retrospective.
The link would be more than welcome in the FB group FILM AND CINEMA APPRECIATION which celebrates the pleasure of movies shared and had always majored in the recognition of great film performances and scoring.

What do you mean? The soundtrack was released on FSM years ago.

Not only has Frank Sinatra been my idol for sixty three years, we were born thirty years and three days apart. He was born on December 12th, 1915, and I was born on December 15th, 1945. That created an even more enduring, and very special bond between us.

Now that Covid has substantially abated, per Tina Sinatra and producer Charles Pignone, many new Sinatra projects and restorations are in the works, including a wholly new Broadway musical based upon his life and times.

As an addendum to the larger article already discussed on these pages, here is an earlier piece showcasing some of the personal interaction that I'd had with Mr. Sinatra over many cherished years ...

Thought that you'd like to know that one of Mr. Sinatra's finest films is airing today (February 7th) on Turner Classic Movies at 12 noon (Eastern time). It's "Some Came Running" (1958), directed by Vincente Minnelli, with a lush, exquisite score by Elmer Bernstein.

Finally figured out how to do this. Just wanted to voice a belated grateful response to the many positive comments here about my work. It truly was, and is, a labor of love. I guess that you've all heard by now that Martin Scorsese is planning a biopic on Francis Albert to star Leonardo De Caprio. Tina Sinatra, apparently, is less than thrilled, but I'm definitely on board as long as they use Frank's vocal tracks for the soundtrack. No one but Sinatra can sing like Sinatra, quoting George Burns.

Also wanted to mention that I'll shortly be visiting Los Angeles for my annual three week visit with my little brother, Erwin. Hoping to see many old friends there. I'll be on the West Coast from July 10th until August 1st when I fly back home to Philadelphia for yet another year. I'll be attending the annual "Music of the Movies" night at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday evening, July 13th. Sad that John is ill, apparently, and unable to conduct this year. Perhaps I'll see some of you there.

God Bless ...

Steve
