If the Oscars aren't already ridiculous enough, now they're imposing absurd eligibility standards. Would THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK be disqualified under the new rules?

The Oscars are a joke. Back to the Future and Batman didn’t even get a nomination, Superman: The Movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back and Memoirs of a Geisha didn’t win.

They are beyond a joke now. When previous winners won BECAUSE of pre-existing music (ROUND MIDNIGHT, BABEL). And I read an interview with some composer recently who said the work actually dried up after he'd won one (Bill Conti?). It was someone big.

Update (Dec. 7): Variety has confirmed Hans Zimmer‘s score for “Dune: Part Two” has been officially disqualified for the Academy Awards, and will not be on the ballot for consideration. In addition, it’s not eligible for the BAFTA Awards as well, which had its first round of voting on Dec. 5. The score is still eligible for nominations for the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards. What a farce.

I actually enjoyed Zimmer‘s scores for both films. Yet, I see why the disqualifiction makes sense. And really, why would Zimmer need another Oscar for this? Make room for those who have never been celebrated before.
