Disney’s ‘Moana 2’ to Feature Music by Mark Mancina, Opetaia Foa’i, Emily Bear & Abigail Barlow
Disney announced today that Mark Mancina & Opetaia Foa’i will return to compose the music for the upcoming animated musical Moana 2. They are joined by Grammy Award winners Emily Bear & Abigail Barlow (Bridgerton: The Musical) who are also contributing music to the film, which is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and follows the title character who – after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors – must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced . Mancina (Twister, Tarzan, Brother Bear, Bad Boys, The Sea Beast) has previously scored the original 2016 movie, which featured original songs composed by himself, Opetaia Foa’i & Lin-Manuel Miranda. Moana 2 will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024 by Walt Disney Pictures.
So this is interesting, it’s a live action sequel opposed to a live action remake? If so that’s a very smart direction to go in. I assume The Rock will reprise his role? Love the original score and songs. So this could be good.
You have to wonder how choppy and bloated this will be considering it was changed from a TV series to a movie late in the game.
The animated film was great because two old schooler's from the 80's and 90's produced and directed the film. If this is left to the new guard I'll have very little faith in it.

Absolutely. The first film was brilliant. I interviewed Musker and Clements when they had a bit of a "MOANA tour" in Europe at the time. Always been a big fan of their work. I would have been open to a proper, animated sequel, but a repurposed TV series sounds ominous. Sounds like any odd TV spin-off that removes much of the original charm and depth. But we'll see.
Hmmm, kinda looks like a repeat of the first film. Why do they have to turn Moana into Rey Skywalker??? It's all Disney knows how to do nowadays. Hayao Miyazaki knew how to write a strong female character without them becoming a superhero. I do like the fact she gets darted! So hopefully that's a sign she won't be a Mary Sue.
