THIS immediately came to mind when I saw this thread.

I had never seen this; that's really wonderful and funny.

He was a big favorite of mine.I have his wonderful recording with the Chicago symphony of Lutoslawski concerto for orchestra.

Ah, yes, that was a big one for me and my wife. The Lutoslawski was an important early concert for us. I'd forgotten the disc. An LP, it's out in the garage frown replaced by Jarvi on CD. I must look for the Fauré, which several have recommended.

I did hear Ozawa live once: the Gurre-Lieder. That was an event! Werner Klemperer narrated. Ozawa had a flair for such large-scaled works.

I only saw him conduct live once -- Mahler's 3rd one afternoon in the shed at Tanglewood in 1993 when I was a teenager, a performance that has haunted me ever since. Recently, I listened to the live BSO recording released around then on Philips, and while I've really fallen for much of Klemperer's Mahler, as far as I'm concerned nobody's ever done the 3rd better than Ozawa -- so clear and restrained, with such care for developing the feeling of each section -- he really casts a spell, and I'm forever haunted by it.

The album I remember best is this one, one of my all-time favorites.

Stravinsky and Berg Violin Concertos with Itzhak Perlman - I think the Stravinsky performance is definitive.

It was always a treat to see him on the cover of a new DG album back in the day - he always seemed so delighted, even when serious.

Ah, yes, that's another great album.

I saw the Pacific Symphony perform this live years ago. I enjoy that work.

Sejii Ozawa in David Hurwitz' personal "The Greatest Recordings Ever", and it's Fauré!

As I mentioned further up, it is among my favorite Ozawa recordings as well. (Or among my favorite Fauré recordings.)

I've got that Faure recording. He's right - it's fantastic.
