The newest video of the Saito Kinen Orchestra’s performance of SCHINDLER’S LIST is now on YouTube:

(Sorry I don’t know how to embed videos!)

While I’m here, allow me to share my brief report of the concert:

Here are the Japanese editions. Since this is a Japanese concert, they may have an advance, or possibly even an exclusive release. The Japanese editions are out on May 3rd, 2024.

The Blu-ray was recorded on September 5th, 2023. It contains 17 tracks. Audio formats on the Blu-ray are:

1. LPCM 2.0 (96kHz/24bit)
2. DTS-HD MA 2.0 + 5.1ch (48kHz/24bit) (this could be a translation error and the DTS-HD MA is just 5.1)
3. Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 core)

There are two editions. One is just the Blu-ray, with only the concert:

https://www.universal-music.co.jp/john-williams/products/ucxg-1008/

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX87LYPV

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX7BQ5G7 (Amazon.co.jp Exclusive with "Bonus Visual Sheet")

https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UCXG-1008 (limited bonus of a postcard)

The other is a Deluxe Edition (also called a First Press Limited Edition) which is the Blu-ray + 2xHybrid Stereo SACD, with the SACDs apparently taken from a DSD master.

This Deluxe Edition also contains bonus interviews with John Williams and Stéphane Denève on the Blu-ray:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX7YNMJ6

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX82C5BV (Amazon.co.jp Exclusive with "Bonus Visual Sheet")

https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UCGG-9233 (limited bonus of a postcard)

There are Japanese translation subtitles listed for both editions.

Unfortunately, Amazon.co.jp are refusing to take international pre-orders for either version, so unless that changes, you would have to order from CDJapan or elsewhere, or use a re-shipper or a friend in Japan.

Tracklist (this is translated by Google):

[Song list]
*Complete live recording version (including MC and applause)

EDIT: It appears that these tracks are conducted by Stéphane Denève:

(1) Miyabi no Kane
(2) Tributes! (for Seiji)
(3) "To the Distant Earth" Suite (from the movie "To the Distant Earth")
(4) From 3 Million Light Years Away (Symphonic Suite from the movie ``ET')
(5) Stargazer (Symphonic Suite from the movie ``ET')
(6) Flying Theme (Symphonic Suite from the movie ``ET')

EDIT: It appears that only the following tracks are conducted by John Williams:

(7) Superman March (from the movie ``Superman')
(8) Hedwig's Theme (from the movie ``Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone')
(9) Phoenix Fawkes (from the movie ``Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets')

McCrutchy,

Thanks for putting all that useful info together!

It seems the Universal Music Store Japan will also offer some bonus merch (like a postcard), but not confirmed yet.

Either way, can’t wait!

Hi all,

Just to correct a mistake I made earlier, the interviews with John Williams and Stéphane Denève are exclusive to the Deluxe Edition Blu-ray + 2xSACD and not included on the single-disc Blu-ray edition. This can be verified by looking at the tracklists at Universal Music Japan:

https://www.universal-music.co.jp/john-williams/products/ucxg-1008/ (Blu-ray: Concert only, no interviews)

https://www.universal-music.co.jp/john-williams/products/ucgg-9233/ (Deluxe Edition: Blu-ray with concert + interviews)

It is also listed at HMV Japan, where the listing made this clear to me. As translated by Google, it clearly says:

[Blu-ray Video]
? Contains 1-17 above *Complete live recording version (includes MC and applause)
? John Williams/Special interview (included only in deluxe edition)
? Stéphane Denève /Special Interview (only included in the Deluxe Edition)

Sorry about that!

I'm waiting for the Uber Deluxe Edition that includes a piece of a concert-used baton...

Is this an exclusive thing, or can we expect to order from DG or other retailers? Comes out to about $100US, which is a lot more than I paid for any other DG Blu-Ray.

I would expect that there will be some kind of European / US release on Blu-ray, but that Japan has an exclusivity window. It could be as short as a few days or weeks, or it could take months or even years. However, because it's John Williams, I would think it will be sooner rather than later.

One thing that might be exclusive to Japan is the SACDs. The previous two concerts in Vienna and Berlin were also issued on SACD only in Japan, but they were issued separately and converted to DSD from 96/24 PCM and 192/24 PCM, respectively. These Tokyo SACDs seem to be DSD stereo (no multi-channel) without PCM conversion, not that the difference would matter to many.

If you just want audio, there is also a standard redbook "UHQCD" CD, with only the 11 tracks conducted by Williams and the Seiji Ozawa tribute track conducted by Denève:

https://www.universal-music.co.jp/john-williams/products/uccg-45092/

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX7VJSSX

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX7VF8KD (Amazon.co.jp Exclusive with "Bonus Visual Sheet")

https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UCCG-45092

If the exchange rate holds, this CD would cost less than $20, before shipping.

Full disclosure: There will also be a 180g LP version which has the same 12 tracks as the CD, but costs over twice as much money:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0CX7NCFRR

I don't really need the CDs or LPs for this. I just need the Blu-ray. In fact, I need the Blu-rays for all of them -- Vienna, Berlin and Tokyo. So far, I haven't been able to find any of them to a price I can afford. It's the curse of a completist, really, because they're basically the same programs, all of them.

No, they are not. Of the 19 pieces in Vienna, only five were repeated in Berlin (out of 18 played):

Excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind,
Theme from Jurassic Park,
Marion's Theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark,
The Raiders March from Raiders of the Lost Ark,
The Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back

Yes, Tokyo is more repetitive. Of the 17 pieces, only six weren't performed in Vienna or Berlin.

Sound the Bells!,
Tributes! (for Seiji),
Three Million Light Years from Home from E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,
Stargazers from E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,
Fawkes the Phoenix from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Theme from Schindler's List

Still, it's a great concert.

In addition, we have a unique Blu-ray of Violin Concerto No. 2, where nothing is repeated. And also the excellent John Williams Celebration conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the program is very unique.

Thanks for the info. I was actually AT the Berlin concert in person (Thursday's opening night, which I believe is the one least represented on the Blu), but I've (deliberately) avoided seeing or hearing anything from the Vienna to get that first experience when I - hopefully some day - get the Blu-ray. But from what I've heard and seen "in the corner of my eye", I took the two to be more or less the same. Glad to hear they're not.
