Over the years, I have accumulated a number of CDs/CDRs of live concert recordings of Jerry Goldsmith film music.

FILMHARMONIC '75 (ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA at The ROYAL ALBERT HALL)
This is one that I would like to have, as it contains some selections that don't seem to have been performed again:
------THE PRIZE (Prelude and Love Theme)
------FOUR FROM TV (Including POLICE STORY and ANNA AND THE KING)
If anyone has the audio and/or video of this concert, please contact me. I hope we can work out a trade or any other
arrangement that pleases us both. Yes, I know that these selections are available on other CD soundtracks.
The same goes for scans of or of extra copies of Concert Programs.

I hope that this post turns up some leads and not just crickets and tumbleweeds.

A number of the London Concerts used to be on YouTube as audio-only files. The only concert left seems to be the
short outdoor concert in Budpest, Hungary, June 27, 1999.

Let's see what turns up.

Does anyone know what concert I attended I have forgotten the year!

It was JG at the Barbican, and specifically he played the new Universal theme and The Shadow theme at the end, and made an offhand comment about the boat movie winning the Oscar over Mulan.

Any help?

Thanks

Hi Clark,

Given the clues you gave, my best guess would be the March 5th, 1999, concert at The Barbican with the LSO.

THE JERRY GOLDSMITH 70TH BIRTHDAY CONCERT
THE SHADOW was the encore.
MULAN was a 1998 film. It lost the Oscar to SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE that year. So that "Oscar loss remark" is appropriate.
The MULAN SUITE was played in the second half.
The "boat movie" (TITANIC) was a 1997 film and was in competition the year before MULAN, so I can't reconcile that
particular Oscar contention remembrance with the facts.

I don't see the new 1995 Universal Logo on the program, unless it was included somewhere without mention in
the program. Unfortunately, there is no recording to which I can refer.

It has always bugged me that I never got to see Goldsmith live. For some reason, I didn't do solo abroad travelling at the time he was in Europe. When you take away trips with my family or school/pastime groups, I made my first long-distance abroad travel (with a couple of friends) as late as 2003, I think, at age 25. A chartered trip to Bulgaria. So his last conducting gig in London, in 2001 (if the list above is correct) was too early for me. And then he died.

I do, however, remember getting a postcard from a group of FSMers who attended the 2001 concert in London. Or perhaps that was Williams in 1999, I can't remember. That was nice.

Hi again Clarke,

I did a little bit of dusting-off research about the remark that you recalled.

I have a full set of LEGEND: THE OFFICIAL GOLDSMITH FILM MUSIC SOCIETY JOURNAL, so I looked in issue number 28,
which reviewed the February 20, 1999, Goldsmith concert in Glasgow with the RNSO. The reviewer, Marie Wilson, did
recall this remark:

"Goldsmith, just to confuse the audience, decided to change the programme line-up and play the theme from
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, but not before making a joke about not receiving an Award because of an iceberg."

So I guess that was one of the lead-in lines he had in his concerts at the time. Boat. Iceberg. Well, TITANIC did beat
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL for the Oscar. Just not MULAN

Hi Thor,

My above list is NOT complete. It is just a list comprising concerts for which there were CD/CDR recordings that
could be found by collectors over the years.

Please refer to the Jerry Goldsmith Online link for a more comprehensive list.

I had a look at the list on the website. It's a little confusing, because no year or date is given in some of those top entries, but from what I can gather, it seems to cut off in 2004, with the top entry.

While I never got to see the man himself, I did actually attend a Goldsmith concert that is NOT on the list of that website. That was here in Norway, in 2011, performed by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. I did a report of that concert, Google Translated below (for anyone interested), but alas I don't think any video exists of the concert. I can't remember seeing any cameras, anyway. I would have to contact the organizer to hear:

The audio from the Barcelona concert i'm pretty sure is recorded.
I visited my parents who were living in Spain, and picked up a rental car at the airport.
Turned on the radio, and this concert played on the radio !!!!!
This was about 1 year after the concert was held.

I was lucky enough to see that Jerry concert in Glasgow. It was doubly amazing because I was in the front row less than 10 feet away from the podium! It was so cool. I remember him also delaying Planet of the Apes and playing The Russia House before that too. Getting to hear The Hunt from POTA played live was unforgettable.
He was due to return to Glasgow a few years later and I got tickets, but it was around the time Jerry was ill again and unable to travel, so Elmer Bernstein was his replacement that night.

Thanks so much, guys!

It's terrible to forget these things-I didn't even have a programme.

I'm putting in a similar query about JW on the Tokyo concert thread (I don't want to derail Ron's thread too much).

It may be a faulty memory but I think the Universal Theme was after the Shadow just as a little treat.

I was so glad to get to see both JW and JG within a year or two-I was front row for JG and 2nd or 3rd for JW.

FILMHARMONIC '75 (ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA at The ROYAL ALBERT HALL)

I would dearly love a recording, of any description, of this concert.

Following the performance of THE WIND AND THE LION, JG drew attention to the presence, in the hall, of the film's legendary cinematographer who was in the audience.

What a thrill it was to be there.

BBC Radio 2 broadcast the 1989 summer pops concert live, and I recorded it to cassette at the time.

Alas, I don't still have it.

Jen’s You Tube has the 3 BBC JG concerts…

https://youtube.com/@LSDScreen?feature=shared

I am pretty sure these are the recordings my Mum did for me on my mini hifi while at the concerts. LSO/NPO was audio tape and the 94 Nottingham concert was mini disc.
I transferred them to CDR and have them as mp3s.

The Budapest recording is pretty good considering.

I have audience audio from the Barbican JG concerts from 1999, 2000 and 2003.

I’ve done a slight update on my concert page for the 2009 and 2015 tribute concerts. This video is from the Paris concert. Pota.
