I know Varese got dragged for the Serinity artwork. But I loved it and absolutely LOVE this too.

It seems that a couple of tracks, namely A CHALLENGE OF COMMAND and HELLBOY VS NUADA (following the Army Chamber / Kill Them (Film Version) track), seem to be missing from the release, probably so as to avoid spreading the score onto two CDs...

Didn’t care for the Serenity artwork but this cover art is really cool. smile

I don’t think Varese would fit 82 min on a single CD even if it’s technically possible.

Neat artwork and I’m cracking up at track 29. Definitely want to get this.

The Elemental Fight & Death sequence/music is one of my favourite pieces from Elfman this century.
Yes, it's a bit EDWARD SCISSORHANDS towards the end*, but it's absolutely gorgeous nevertheless.
While INSTINCT and REAL STEEL are what I really want Expanded wink by Elfman from Varese, this will do for now.

*but only to normal people. My missus always says "did he do Scissorhands?" when the piece plays out in the film.

This artwork (if final) is by Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy. His style is very distinct.

I remember enough of the OST that I'm intrigued, but can anyone recommend some highlight tracks of the unreleased material to check out when this drops (as the kids say)?

Was track 25 above on the original album under a different title? That's a good track. I just went and played it on YouTube.

The Elemental Fight (incorrectly credited as 'Flight') and the Hellboy Vs Nuada cue (seemingly not on the album) were probably the biggest omissions.

I like the score a lot, and I am going to buy this release, but I have to say that I think the album plays really well and doesn't have any major omissions.

The ‘Vs Nuada’ cue was the one i always looked for. Its the climax of the film, seems weird not to have it. Sure it isn’t part of the last track?

The last track is everything after the fight until the army shuts down.

The Nuada track is just over three minutes, it's a weird choice that they would drop that and include nearly two and half minutes of Troll Market source music.

Huh. I didn't even remember that I had this score, but apparently I do.

Guess I'll get this then.

Also nice to see a CD over 80 minutes for once....

Pretty stupid to "expand" a score, and then omit cues from the original album.

Color me disappointed that they didn't include the two cues I'd always missed--as others have said, the elemental fight and Nuada fight.

Halli Cauthry is credited with additional music for the film--do you think the omitted cues were Cauthry compositions, hence their omission?

If it's not Scottish it's crap!

Ok comparing the old CD with the digital version there's been a pretty decent reamstering. The original has a lot of hiss (especially for something from 2008!) and the new one sounds pretty clean, albeit also quieter.

As for anything missing.....are people sure? There's for sure some reordering of stuff and seemingly cues combined or taken apart so one of those comparison spreadsheets like they tend to do at JWFan would be nice for this.

(Also given it's not quite out yet, perhaps the CD will be a 2CD set with everything)

Danny Elfman – Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (Original Motion Picture Score - Deluxe Edition CD)
UPC: 888072557871
Release Date: March 22, 2024
Regular price$ 25.00

Expected to ship the week of March 22, 2024.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) is the only collaboration, so far, between two icons of fantasy and horror cinema: director Guillermo del Toro and composer Danny Elfman. The sequel to del Toro’s 2004 hit Hellboy explored Mike Mignola’s comic-book mythology as the title character (Ron Perlman) and his allies at the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense must fight a mythical prince who seeks to reclaim Earth for magical creatures.

Elfman’s grandly symphonic score for Hellboy II features large orchestra and choir, providing everything from pulse-pounding action to gothic scope and offbeat humor. There’s world music for the film’s “Troll Market,” homages to the great Bernard Herrmann (an Elfman idol) in “Doorway,” and surprising intimacy for Hellboy’s relationship with Liz (Selma Blair). It’s a delightful, fantastical romp as only Elfman can provide—and a perfect match for del Toro’s vision.

“Anybody who does fantasy or horror well is somebody that I want to work with,” says Elfman in Daniel Schweiger’s new liner notes for The Deluxe Edition. Del Toro, for his part, wanted to differentiate the two Hellboy movies: “Hellboy II had an off-kilter and whimsical approach, yet one with undertones of darkness that I knew would be great for Danny. This was decidedly more melancholy because it looked at the illusion of fantasy... Everything is in decay, and that needed Danny to write a fantastic symphony for Mike Mignola’s universe.”

Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released in a 20-track, hour-long program by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film. The Deluxe Edition debuts a 39-track, 82-minute expanded score across two discs, with a 24-page booklet.
