By the way, is this the one and only time that James Horner mentioned the existence of other people who stooped so low as to write "music" for films? I had UNCOMMON VALOR drop through the postal boxage on Monday, and I haven't even had time to open it yet! I feel like I'm turning into The John Blanken Shop. --------------------- It's been a while since I read it, but yeah, I think he does pretend he didn't ever know what film music was and had never heard of Jerry Goldsmith and the like, despite hanging out with his daughter at school and coming from a Hollywood family background. Jamie Whoppers...more like.
Have you ever heard UNCOMMON VALOUR before? You're in for a treat if you haven't...it's fantastic (Monsieur Neary...I Envy You).
Splendid. Well, I know you like ALAMO JOBE and I'm sure you like his STAR TREK/ROCKETEER whoop whoops, so happy days. Be sure to write it up a storm...in the right thread though.
I recall a very early interview with Horner in a sci-fi fanzine (Galactic Journal maybe?...I'd have to check the loft) wherein he expressed his love for John Williams' THE MISSOURI BREAKS score
Yes, it's in Starbust. I used his words in the book.
And a quick mention about the booklet/notes by J-BM & Frank K...absolutely brilliant. A joy to read. Clear, concise, informative...the perfect icing on the cake.
Haha. I remember that Starburst interview but I also have one from a really small scale fanzine (pretty sure it's something like Galactic or Galaxy Journal). It's funny to reread that Starburst one now. We now know why Wolfen came pretty quickly (cos he'd already pretty much written it for Alligator...and he turned down working for Lewis Teague again on Cujo). Young Mr Horner is also not sure if John Williams* is good enough until he takes a chance cos he's just riffing on Korngold and James doesn't like to listen to other music when he's scoring cos it might dilute his own work. Sheesh.
Thanks for posting that, Trekfan. It's an eye-opener after all those years. I just hope that when I'm famous they don't raid the Internet Archives for things I said in 1982.
Indeed Graham. I once caused a to-do in London around that time, shouting stuff like "Queen Elizabeth is a man! Prince Charles is a faggot! Winston Churchill was full of shit" but I think I got away with it.
