Film music's loudest band.

Film music's loudest band.

I saw the tour a few years ago. Had to get drunk to go and get over my own snobbery to be able to have a good time. I did. It was a lot to take in. Too much. Lots of schmaltz. Still, now, years later and I cannot decide if it was one of the best or worst concerts I have ever been to.

Yeah, it sure is immersive! And a fantastic show.

I liked the 2017 show. Less enthused with the 2022 one. Wonder what this brings?

Talking about Zimmer-music live, even my 100 000 people Norwegian city had a Zimmer-concert this week, without the man himself of course. They even put on an extra concert. It was quite enjoyable all in all. The "others" part was a suite by Morricone. Most of the musicians were from Poland.

That's great, FB. There are soooo many Zimmer concert events out there, from various sources and with varying degrees of involvement from the man himself. There's one being promoted hard in social media, "Candlelight"-something, that's also been making the rounds. It's great, of course, but also kinda strange to think about. Back in the 90s, us fans all longed for Zimmer to do JUST ONE concert with his film music. And when it finally happened with the the Ghent one in 2000 (captured on the wonderful THE WINGS OF A FILM live album), nobody expected this whole live industry would take hold some years later.

There is another one in my city in May. Looks like a combined Zimmer/Williams-concert, but only Zimmer is mentioned in the title:

Illuminated! That's the one I meant with "candlelights". I'm skeptical, personally. Seems very hokey. For that price (almost 700 NOK), one would expect something extraordinary.

Because of the Williams-selections?

No, the whole concept.

But what's the difference beween the one I witnessed this week and Illuminated?

The whole thing with a small orchestra (no idea about their backgrounds), a light canon or two, some evergreens from Zimmer and beyond, and packaging it as some unique, envelopping event...the whole thing just seems exploitative to me. But that's just going from what I've read and occasionally seen on YouTube. I don't know the difference between what you attended and the Illuminated one. A lot of these Zimmer concerts (beyond the ones with the man himself) kinda bleed together as one big mash to me.

Did you like the one you attended?

Well, I paid 725 NOK for the one this week...

It was just that you wrote "great" on the first one and than being very critical to the second one, LOL.

I gave it a 4+ on the dice. Enjoyable, but surely not great. I was impressed they had a selection from A WORLD APART though, but sadly not the main theme/end credits.

There were also film clips to the music, plus vocalists.

Illuminated is only 75 minutes long, that's kind of short.

The first 'great' was in relation to you (presumably) having a good time, the second 'great' was in relation to having Zimmer and film music concerts en masse these days, not any particular concert (or concert series). That can only be a good thing. The quality of the individual shows, however, is another question altogether. Thanks for the comments on the show you attended.

Batman vs Superman really? I am huge Zimmer fan and there is nothing in there I would like to hear in a orchestral concert. The Wonder Woman theme sure, but not in a concert like this.

I've tried revisiting that score numerous times but still walk away scratching my head. The only cues I enjoy aside from the Wonder Woman theme are either based around music from Man of Steel or the Beautiful Lie cue after the first 15 seconds (which only repeats in its entirety once or twice if I'm not mistaken).

I forgot about "A Beautiful Lie." A very beautiful cue indeed, but putting it in a orchestral concert is a bit of a stretch.
