Ark Soundtrack Square is happy to announce an upcoming release from CINEMA-KA label. Available on June 19th.
Pre-orders are now being accepted!

* BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE by Ifukube, Akira
The great battle that unfolds on the dark side of the moon! A must-have disc for the whole universe!

Although one of the most popular among special effects fans/movie music fans, this film, which has not been available in general stores for a long time, has been re-released for the 70th anniversary of its release!

The film, which is a sister volume of "The Mysterians", the first Toho special effects film in color by Honda Ishiro and Tsuburaya Eiji, has evolved even further, and Akira Ifukube's heroic music enlivens it even more, brought back to life by the latest remastering by engineers who have worked on Toho special effects soundtracks for many years.

In addition to the sound sources used in the film, including M32, aka "BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE March," which was used in "Shin Godzilla" in 2016, the bonus tracks include all the other takes, making this the definitive Natal release.

Any info if the sound has received an upgrade or remaster?
If so I may just pick this up.

Now this one didn't surprise me, though I didn't expect it so soon. Another grab for me.

Words of wisdom.

Words of wisdom.

Now I'm seriously glad not to have picked up the Toho Music set. It's clearly (and thankfully) out-of-print since Cinema-kan is now giving this and "Earth Defense Force" ("The Mysterians") the treatment they deserve.

I'm also no longer seeing Toho Music's Rodan/Space Amoeba set on Toho's webstore, so it may be out-of-print too. If so, expect those to get the Cinema-kan treatment in the near future.

I don't mean to derail the thread, but did Ifukube ever write anything lyrical and calm, for a non-sci fi movie?

Check out The Burmese Harp.

Great news. Hopefully, Atragon and Latitude Zero will follow.

It's no problem. I've seen well over 100 films he scored and the answer is yes. Absolutely. There are too many to list right off the bat, but "The Ground" (1957) quickly comes to mind. It's pretty monothematic, but it's gorgeous. Unfortunately, only two cues were ever released. The theme is actually a reworking of his theme from "Cape Ashizuri" (1954) which another good one from Ifukube. It's scored for piano, English horn and harp.

While a common choice, I would also recommend "The Burmese Harp" (1956). Not a whole lot of the score survives, and what is extant are pretty much limited to outtakes. However, the surviving material is great.

The Toho Music releases are still in-print, so those will likely not be reissued in the near future.

If it exists, I'd love to see a complete LOST WORLD OF SINBAD (aka SAMURAI PIRATE aka DAI TOZUKU) by Toho. There's a 14-minute suite on "The Film Music of Masaru Satoh, Volume 4" that is marvelous.

Ah yes! I have that album. On top of that suite, I've seen the film. The score is nice. As far as I know, the tapes are fully extant. I'm sure it'll eventually happen. Of course, the demand for it needs to be there.

This classical work (Kushiro Marshland) is positively gorgeous and relaxing:

Amen to that. Cinema-Kan also produced expanded versions of several of Satoh's samurai film scores that are featured on Volume 1 of that Soundtrack Listeners Communications series, and I wouldn't mind if they dug a little deeper and resurrected more of those. Satoh had an uncanny knack for combining traditional Japanese folk music with contemporary Western musical trends of the 1960s and applying them to Edo period settings.

That's a fantastic example! It's even both a concert work and film score. "Kushiro Marshland" is another I've seen.

I've got all but two of Cinema-kan's Sato releases. The two I don't have didn't do much for me, so I didn't grab them. However, more Sato is certainly welcome. I'd like to see what Cinema-kan could do with his Kurosawa scores, but the Toho Music releases (which are great) are still in-print.

Some of my favorite scores from Sato happen to be dark and brooding in nature. These include "Godzilla's Counterattack" ("Godzilla Raids Again"), "Monster Snowman" ("Half Human"), "Spider Web Castle" ("Throne of Blood") and "Daibosatsu Pass" ("Sword of Doom").
