Well, this should be an interesting hodge-podge of WTF, since the FMR article seems to indicate Britell was doing his own score, and now Metzger is recording his own score. White Fang all over again?

There are people posting photos of the latest poster stand of Mufasa on twitter. Metzger is the sole composer credited on it.
Likely someone at Disney got cold feet and wanted the music to be a little more traditional. Hans had spoken about a first draft of his 2019 re-score that was wildly different and didn't work; one has to wonder if that was the initial attitude for the prequel as well.
Zimmer's gone now, but if Britell is still attached it suggests either a kind of Obi-Wan Kenobi end result or a Top Gun: Maverick "put everyone in the credits so no one feels bad about being rejected" scenario. If he’s not attached, it raises questions about how much control Barry Jenkins has over his film.
And who knows what relationship this'll have with the songs Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mark Mancina are doing (I assume some, given Mancina’s history with Metzger)? Or what if any role Pharrell still has?

Between the newest trailer suggesting a much more family-friendly affair than the original advertising did, the probable late game composer swap, and director Barry Jenkins’ recent comments about not wanting to do a film like this again, it’s enough to make you wonder if / when Disney took Jenkins’ film away from him.
Barry Jenkins certainly sounds like he hated making a movie in a computer. Aside from a nice check it is hard to imagine why he did this to himself. It sounded like torment for him.
There is some live action background plate work here. That is somewhat surprising, and a good thing. I am used to studios going full bore CGI backdrops, and they invariable look horrendous and fake. On the other hand the whole crux of the problem with 'realistic' CGI animation talking animal movies is this whole fence straddling. It is real, is it fantasy? Going to 'real' CGI talking animals is always very strange looking, and dropping them into real background plates is odd. The whole idea of making realistic looking talking animals is pretty odd in itself. I think it runs against the whole DNA of Disney animation.
Is that an A.I. created cover? My god its awful. It snows in Africa?
And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time. The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life. Where nothing ever grows; No rain nor rivers flow. Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?
