For those who haven't seen the best documentary made on a film composer ever, ENNIO is running on TCM on Monday. In fact every monday in June is film music night including that fantastic Max Steiner documentary made around the same time.
It really is a great documentary. I saw it in a theater--an old single screen theater that was around for Morricone's entire career. I can't speak highly enough about the film. See it if you haven't.

As Austin Wintory said at one of the last screenings we attended "How could you watch this so many times? It left me emotionally drained." It IS a powerful film
a few more takeaways from the parts viewed (rest to be watched via TCM On Demand)--
A. Joan Baez explaining that she pre-recorded vocals for Sacco And Vanzetti with just a piano accompaniment and how astonished she was later after the full orchestrations were added, that never before had the full range of her voice been captured so the way he had. And it had me recalling that's how the process went for the largely Broadway cast hired for the film version of Damn Yankees as well.
B. The one director or whoever stating that EM had the "melodic vein" even if he may not have been a melodist, per se. Echoes of the same contention for Herrmann ("melodic aesthetic") presented here going back twenty or more years.
C. Wonderful emphasis on the "Deborah" theme in the segment devoted to Once Upon A Time In America. The huzzahs for this score and consensus of commentators that it may have been his best work overall has compelled me to contemplate placing it as his "best" alongside my ultimate "favorite (Cinema Paradiso)."
D. The willingness of directors to lavish unconditional praise of music in films. Refreshing candor compared to certain directors whose egos won't permit competition in the Attention Department.
I saw it on either NOW TV or BBC4 some years ago and didn't think much of it, personally. It's not one I'd watch again. As it was directed by Guiseppe Tornatore, I'm surprised La Leggenda del Pianista Sull'Oceano (The Legend of 1900) didn't get much coverage and nothing for Mission to Mars, being my two fave Ennios (though I know both films weren't very successful, though I adore both).

Priceless. How to kill all future credibility and show yourself up as a mug in one post.
My two favourite music docs are Ennio and Edgar Wright’s marvellous The Sparks Brothers. Both show an understanding of their subjects that transcends biography and instead of simply reflecting legend, adds to it.
