SEASON 1:
Based upon the 1962 film by the same name (and scored by Alfred Newman), this series is a kind of continuation, but makes some changes including changing the family name from Rawling to Macahan. The main star of the series is James Arnes, and it is narrated by William Conrad -- who both played Marshal Matt Dillon (one on TV, one on radio). And there are more "Gunsmoke" nods, even down to all three composers having worked on "Gunsmoke". The first run began in 1976. "The Macahans" (A.K.A.: the feature-length pilot) https://ok.ru/video/3155398036154 Highlights: 0:22 in.^ 4:17 in.^ 10:59 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(second) 23:42 in. 26:25 in. 33:43 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 43:29 in.^ 44:49 in.^ 50:43 in.^ 1:00:43 in. Aside from a little narration, an almost SFX free montage cue.^ 1:05:59 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 1:10:37 in. 1:11:59 in. A cue like this is unmistakable Immel; it has a lot of ideas he liked to use on many scores. The entire cue itself is a close cousin to a cue from an episode of "Police Woman" he scored.^ 1:16:00 in.^ 1:21:49 in.^ 1:27:56 in.^ 1:32:12 in. 1:36:22 in. Dark "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" SFX free montage cue to a slow-motion attack sequence. 1:37:50 in.^ 1:39:37 in. 1:44:00 in.^ 1:48:22 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 1:55:49 in. Final cue which also closes out the end credits in a grand finale. A massive score where the material never gets old and it doesn't sound like he was struggling to get the job done. This episode score alone would take two or three CD's to cover. Despite the quality of all the scores, none of them were even nominated for an Emmy. Immel did a song that was nominated, however. "You fixin' to take me back?" Zeb: "Yeah -- over my saddle!"

SEASON 2:
This new set of episodes comes about two years later, in 1978. Bruce Broughton takes over as composer. At a certain point during this run, the episodes became a one-hour format, however, for a DVD release, episodes were combined, as a result the episodes get kind of muddled on the internet, with confused listings. What would appear -- for example -- to be three episodes missing from my season two coverage, are in fact combined DVD releases, so nothing is missing. "Buffalo Story" https://ok.ru/video/3155422939834 Alternative link: https://ok.ru/video/8018168384141 Highlights: 0:20 in.^ 10:31 in.^ 16:20 in.^ 17:41 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 21:26 in.^ 24:39 in. 30:34 in.^ 33:46 in. 36:36 in. 39:30 in.^(39:58) 44:34 in.^ 47:21 in.^ 54:08 in.^ 1:01:10 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 1:02:48 in.^ 1:12:21 in.^ 1:20:21 in.^ 1:27:01 in.^ 1:30:09 in.^ This episode re-united James Arnes and Ricardo Montalban, who were previously in the "Gunsmoke" episode "Chato" (one of the series' best episodes, in my opinion). And they work together so well. In the scene referenced in a below paragraph, you see how naturally the two act together. I won't complain since Broughton did a fantastic job, I just kind of wanted a "Gunsmoke" trifecta and John Parker creating that, but alas... I don't know who played the buffalo guide, but he did a great job. For those who continue to persist in the rumor that Ricardo was wearing prosthetics in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, I point to this scene a few years prior to that film, about 49:00 in where he's wearing barely anything and clearly built. Out-of-context quote... "Rub him down real good, Jeff, he's deserved it."

And the cue after the commercial break.^ 1:05:13 in.^ 1:07:46 in.^ 1:14:00 in.^ 1:20:08 in.^ There's a lot of good casting in this mini series, and I thought I should point out that that Harris Yulin plays a very effective baddie who gives off perfect uncomfortable creepy bad vibes. He's still alive and still acting, at the age of 86. (NtM: 1:15:54)
