Frankly, when his time is up let it be while dictating new music in the Amadeus style. Or on a final sweep of the baton while doing his thing on the podium. It's called Going In Style.
So unfortunate that he has health issues and can't conduct, but let us not forget that he is 92 years old. I think that he should focus more on composing and leave the conducting to others. Of course orchestras love to have him because he sells tickets and some people may have the chance to be in one of his concerts for the first time but I think he should stop conducting. Even composing may be difficult at his age. In any case, at 92 years old it is important to closely monitor your health. Although at this age people no longer think about it. Thus, I hope to also live to be 100 years old. Of course the interaction with younger people in the orchestra and with an audience gives joy and energy to an artist. Anyway, I hope for his best.
I think it's been a gift that he's been able to conduct as long as he has around the world. I'm sure at his age, he has to dial it down now. I think we would all prefer Williams to stay off the tour trail if it means more years of him being on this planet and composing more lovely music.
Possibly the last public appearance (to date) of Mr Williams, last april. Photo was taken during the LACO gala honoring Michael Gorfaine and Sam Schwartz.
