========================================================================

I thought that I would also share the ballot of the highest-ranking living composer (#19, Steve Reich):

Steve Reich's list of the top 5 greatest composers of all time:

1. Pérotin
2. Johann Sebastian Bach
3. Igor Stravinsky
4. Béla Bartók
5. John Coltrane

Here is the link to all of the individual ballots: https://www.pressreader.com/uk/bbc-music-magazine/20191030/281552292652685

Very few people voted for any film composers, though they are some very rare mentions of Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Elliot Goldenthal, Jerry Goldsmith, and John Williams.

Needs more John Williams.

But I'm surprised Steve Reich beats out Philipp Glass. And where is Arvo Pärt? Isn't he, like, the most-performed living classical composer?

This is all fine and well, but only FSM approved lists matter.

Steve Reich is generally considered to be the greatest living composer (at least greatest living American composer): "The American composer and critic Kyle Gann has said that Reich "may ... be considered, by general acclamation, America's greatest living composer" (though Philip Glass and John Adams are sometimes spoken about in a similar way too). Reich's acclamation is above that of Glass, which may help explain why he ranked more highly in this poll.

Yes, but Pärt wasn't popular among the 174 composers that they asked, only two composers voted for Pärt (while three composers voted for Bernard Herrmann, and John Williams), the same number of people who voted for Ennio Morricone, Elliot Goldenthal, and Jerry Goldsmith. Remember, it was only a list of top 5 greatest composers, not 100.

That isn't a proper list. It is more like a who's who. And living composers. What do they know!

Saw this thread a while back and meant to ask, given the methodology, isn't it a miracle that anyone voted for any film composers at all? These composers were asked to name their top 5, right? (At worst, they ended up naming their favourite 5.) So it's somewhat astounding that a few respondents believe only four people in history were better than Williams or Morricone or Goldsmith or Herrmann or Goldenthal. Is it just recency bias? Or did 20th century composers get better training? Personally, I can't explain it, but then, I'm musically illiterate....

Yes, of course it is. I certainly wouldn't expect most active composers (at least not most contemporary classical composers) to name any film composer(s) in their top 5.

I was surprised to see Tchaikovsky so far down the list.

I'm not. The station doesn't play his music much.
He doesnt seem very "in" there.
And the only time they play Morricone is silva rerecording of The mission.

If Steve Reich had 2 older brothers, would he be the third Reich? wink

Just shows how much those composers know.

I think maybe Williams and Pärt are too "pop" for the composers asked. These two continually battle for the most-performed living composer in the world (I believe Williams was ahead of Pärt in 2023, whereas Pärt was ahead of Williams lin 2022....2024 remains to be seen.). That's fine - a subjective poll like this doesn't have to be representative of the actual situation in the world, but it's an interesting observation nonetheless.

Still "they "seem to be stuck in a rather conservative mindset.
Where is Leonard Bernstein AND John Williams.

It shows that filmmusic is still regarded ( in those kinda circles ) as entertainment music.
I admit not many filmcomposers are eligible contenders ( Alex North,Miklos Rozsa and Herrmann for sure)
but very narrow minded and old fashioned.
And where is ARVO PÄRT?

Well listswink

Sondheim is on the list. That's interesting since he's associated with popular stage works & not concert music. I wonder if Arthur Sullivan or Richard Rogers would have made a list like this when they were at the peak of their careers.

It's a travesty that neither Copland nor Walton are on the list.

At least Vaughan Williams was on there.
