I have been a bit turned off by the promotion of this film that we've been inundated with these past weeks (months). Then I recall Barbie and so many others and it's just the way it's done these days, especially when it's Disney.
This film is not from Disney, it's from Universal.

It's sad to see Disney change track with their animated film album releases, from the days when they would front load the disc with the songs and include the score tracks at the end. Now it's (generally) one (short) CD for the songs. One sing-a-long CD (probably). And a digital score-only release (unless Japan delivers a Deluxe song/score release).

In fairness to Universal, they don't have Disney money, so to recoup everything they lost on Cats and Dolittle every little thing helps.
"Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King are Disney's current releases" ------------------------ Yes, and those were the other two CD titles in HMV yesterday (alongside WICKED) that had opted to jettison any score from their singular song albums...unlike the good old days.
Ah, that's too bad. Maybe they'll do one when the first movie comes out on home video, or maybe when the score for Part 2 is released, as a double album.
I am glad I saw this movie in a big theater with great surround sound. I enjoyed this movie. It is such a huge movie so full of details, and I'm sure I missed a lot of details. I will watch it again when it streams so that I can concentrate on Powell's score. I tended to concentrate more on the songs. Does anyone know if he orchestrated the songs? The orchestrations for the songs were superb.
I have never been a big fan of the songs in this musical except for Defying Gravity. I learned to like a few more in this movie.
C. Erivo as the green witch was great, and her voice was very strong and lovely. The big SHOCK for me was A. Grande's vocals. Her voice was amazing and at times almost operatic. I've never heard her sing like she did in this movie. She also does a nice job of playing a spoiled, ditzy blonde.
If this movie wins any Oscars, I would bet Oscars would be given for best costumes, editing and special effects.
The last 15 minutes when Defying Gravity was sung were stunning.
Mmmmh..the soundclips...for me,-and I really like Powells scoring and melodies-,..is a bit generic and one has the feeling that it has been there before a hundred times. Its a score that I have listened to in numerous movies during the last decades and its kinda boring and repetitive in style.
