Back at'cha, Bf and v553. He listened to WHATTITW and ruled out himself, sensing it has the Alpert touch but qualifying that as being a bit too "clean" for Herb. And he's now x'ing out those other possibilities as well.

Would be funny if it ends up Alpert but either way we could have something of a definitive answer yet.

PS
just listened to "Cast...Wind" and I see your point, v553 smile

According to the YT post, the one I mentioned earlier, there was a BBC documentary made about Armstrong where this session was talked about (though I don't know by whom, perhaps Barry himself). I'll try to find it, post the link.

I didn't get to have the sort of real-world nostalgic association of Herb Alpert recordings like you did with basketball games in your youth, Howard. But in a different way, they conducted me to a very important "next stage" for me. Alpert is still alive and in his 90s; I hope he's in good health. But Howard, I'll thank you for the pleasure I had today in pulling out and revisiting some LPs I hadn't listened to in about 40 years.

Feeling’s mutual. Yw and thank you, Steven. Nice anecdote tying in Morricone. The origins of an ear for film music and subsequent love make for neat, relatable banter.

Well, Mr. Stamm has pretty much "exhausted his contacts" and is coming up empty. But he may have one more possibility.

Another wonderful phone conversation this afternoon. I had mentioned (via email) trumpeter Harold Lieberman who led a jazz quartet in a performance at my junior high school that included Hank Jones at the piano. Marvin responded that HL was a nice guy whom he worked with on occasion and sent me this link:

Ha, so Derek Smith in addition to those two lived/worked around my neck of the Jersey woods. Anyway, MS said he hasn't heard "Cast...Wind" in many moons and is going to give it a listen. He also touched upon "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" among other reminiscences. Oh and he picks up the flugelhorn every so often to give the chops a workout. At 85. cool

Really great stuff, HL. When I was researching studio brass players of the late sixties and early seventies I saw that Marv came out to LA for some dates with Hugo Montenegro on some Screen Gem shows, specifically, I Dream of Jeannie (and maybe The Partridge Family?). On one episode, about the return of Jeannie's dog, the section played, I think, piccolo trumpets. Montenegro is a great favorite of mine and it would be interesting to know what Marv's experiences with him was like (especially since HM only lived into his mid-fifties).

Update

Yep, the aforementioned IDOJ session took place 11 August, 1969...and what a section Hugo had: Marv, Manny Stevens, James Salko and Buddy Childers. Now that's firepower! Manny is listed as having the only double, so maybe he played the piccolo part.
