Suppose he was Brian Tyler's son, would you be complaining?

Yeah, Thomas & David Newman, Joel Goldsmith, Zoe Poledouris, now this... can't the children of great composers get a decent job?

The children of celebrities should work in a factory or mine for ten years before they get into show business so they understand the value of a dollar.

Yes.

Dozens of very good composers (like Abel Korzeniowski) get a shitty project once every couple of years, and this time all it takes is an anonymous son, or daughter, without any CV, and they immediately get the biggest franchises. Ridiculous.

How good it is that several of Hans Zimmer's children did not become composers, because then Lorne Balfe and the entire RCP would have been out of a job for a loooong time...

Interesting... have you seen Mick's CV? No... that's what I thought.

Here's what a two-second Google search unearthed.
https://www.gsamusic.com/wp-content/uploads/Giacchino_Mick.pdf

He's been writing his scores since 2015. He's also been working closely with his Dad helping orchestrate, arrange and write additional cues for as long as he could hum a tune. So, yeah, he's put in his time and yes, his Dad most likely helped him get this project but as we all know in Hollywood, it's who you know and not what talent you have. But in this case, Mick is extremely talented.

Was it David Shire that said he would rather be friends with five directors than five composers?

Let's look beyond the fact that you're confusing righteous indignation for actual knowledge (if you honestly have any idea what it took for Mick Giacchino to get this gig, please enlighten us with the details).

Of course connections help in the entertainment industry, as they do in every industry. (My freshman roommate dropped out of college and went to work at his dad's hardware store. Nepo baby!!!)

Are we suggesting that Ryan Coogler should not have been allowed to hire his USC roommate Ludwig Göransson to score Fruitvale Station?

John Williams' father played on such scores as Vertigo, where he introduced his son to Bernard Herrmann. Acceptable?

The fantasy that these things are standing in the way of a Utopian meritocracy is really pretty silly. Of course connections (and occasional random chance) matter. But ultimately, a connection may get you a break but not a career.

Since when has this ever been a problem in scoring? Thomas Newman and Randy Newman are some of the most famous film composers alive and they're nepo babies.

I don't mind composer kids following in their parents' footsteps, of course. That's just cool.

I'm more worried about the fact that I don't like Giacchino sr.'s music very much, especially him taking on and over many franchises that I like. And now he's created SPAWN that does the same!

In seriousness, maybe he doesn't sound anything like his father. Thomas Newman rarely sounds like Alfred Newman, for example. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

No worries, A.I. will soon be replacing the Nepo's.

Nepobabies > fanbabies. SCIENCE.

  • No worries, A.I. will soon be replacing the Nepo's.

Would that type of nepotism be called necrobabies or crytpobabies?

Indeed. Fortunately there are no scatological references this time ('I shit my pants', 'Shittunes', 'shitty assignments'...).

I thought the thread title was a facetious one about Michael until I clicked. Interesting. I wonder if the music will be better than the insufferable comments here. That's a low bar to clear though.

Mick composed this cue from the first Jurassic World score 10 years ago

More recently he composed "I'm Nicky Salapu" for Next Goal Wins

    Looks quite crap.

I came to the same conclusion without even watching the trailer.

I'm still open-minded about the score, however, but not hopeful...

The most recent Star Wars-related scores I truly enjoy are Rogue One (Giacchino the Elder) and Solo (Powell).
