Someone on LinkedIn just said he was cinema’s David Bowie, which may or may not stand up to scrutiny, but it’s an interesting thought.

RIP Rocco, Tancredi, Piero, Roch, Roger - and above all Jef Costello, Le Samouraï.

There's no doubt Delon was a formidable presence, but his Le Samouraï character has got to be the worst assassin ever.

Oh Not Alain frown
He waa a pretty boy but one who could seriously act.
Another stalwart from my youth gone. (Sicilian clan, circle rouge, le samourai, etc.
Ironically enough saw Red Sun again only few weeks ago, first time in years.
He could do a mean, cold nasty too.

Strangely enough, my dad and I were talking about him just last Friday. As Bill mentioned, I was telling my dad about Red Sun that had been on TV recently. We then talked about Is Paris Burning? which my dad said he hadn't seen in years but always liked it. I had to mention Maurice Jarre doing the music for both.

Is Paris burning - a much underrated ww2 film - shows up regularly on talking pictures Thomas

Yeah that's the one that came to my mind immediately upon hearing the news. Great b&w from marvelous '66. That and Algiers. Bruddah.

R.I.P.

I recently rewatched both Zorro and Scorpio. Maybe this news will finally spur me on to watching Borsalino.

My favorite films of his are The Leopard, L'Eclisse and Monsieur Klein.

Sad news. What a powerhouse actor, who oozed of charisma. Favourite film for me is L'ECLISSE, followed by MONSIEUR KLEIN.

Perhaps a bit more style over substance, but a great screen presence nevertheless.
RIP Monsieur Delon

I disagree Lars. Maybe you not seen enough his films?. He was a bit like Ryan Oneal, dismissed by many till they saw Barry Lyndon.

Luchino Visconti, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Louis Malle all chose him to be in their films. If he didn't have plenty of substance, they wouldn't have picked him

And a lucky piece of work. My recollection of the start of his career is they practically begged him to do movies simply because of his looks. From the remarks here, it worked out just fine in the long run.

(and yes, I'm jealous)

Alain Delon made his feature film debut in the 1957 French crime drama QUAND LA FEMME S’EN MELE (When the Woman Gets Involved). In the film, “Henri Godot” (Jean Servais) is the owner of a nightclub in Paris. He hires young hit man, “Jo” (Alain Delon), to kill his arch rival “Boby” (Yves Deniaud). But Jo gets entangled with the intriguing femme fatale, “Angele” (Edwige Feuillère), who is Boby's mistress. Before Jo can complete the job, “Felix Seguin” (Bernard Blier) arrives in Paris with his daughter “Colette” (Sophie Daumier) by his first wife. He is there to take vengeance for the death of his second wife in a fire that was arson. Jo and Colette fall for one another.

Yves Allégret directed the film. Five minutes of Paul Misraki’s score were released on a 1998 Misraki compilation CD from Pomme Music. The film did not get a U.S. theatrical release. It first appeared on American television on 28 September 1970, when it was aired by a Philadelphia UHF station under the title “Send a Woman When the Devil Fails.”

Alain Delon made his first appearance on U.S. movie screens as the lead in the French comedy 3 MURDERESSES. Delon plays handsome but smug young playboy “Julien Fenal,” who arrives for the wedding of ex-girlfriend “Agathe” (Pascale Petit) to older (age 32) “André” (Pierre Mondy). Agathe does not want to give Julien up, but she must compete with sexy “Sabine” (Mylène Demongeot) and lovely “Hélène” (Jacqueline Sassard). Fed up with Julien, the three women decide to become three murderesses, and steal poison from the pharmacy of Agathe’s father, “Monsieur Courcel” (Albert Médina).

Michel Boisrond directed and co-wrote the 1959 film. Delon made some personal appearances in New York to promote the movie. Paul Misraki’s score has not had a release. The film grossed $2.4 million in the U.S.

Alain Delon’s first big role was in PURPLE NOON (Plein Soleil), a crime drama directed by René Clément and written by Clément and Paul Gégauff from the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Delon played “Tom Ripley,” a talented mimic, moocher, forger, and all-around criminal improviser. A wealthy American businessman hires Ripley to bring his son “Philip” (Maurice Ronet) home from the Italian Riviera where he is enjoying life with his lover “Marge” (Marie Laforêt). But there's more to Tom Ripley than even he can guess.

Delon was cast in the 1960 film after Clément saw him in 3 MURDERESSES. The film played in the U.S. in 1961, where it grossed just $618,000. But it was an international hit with critics. In 1962, Clément and Gégauff won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Foreign Film Screenplay. Nino Rota’s score was released by Universal France in 2005.
