In a career filled the the brim with gems, overflowing in fact, my favorite is SPIES LIKE US. Probably a controversial choice - certainly not easy one - but for me it sums up absolutely everything I love about the Master's music.

Which is yours? I dare you to choose only one.

Highlights of SPIES LIKE US:

1 - The Ace Tomato Company -a third of the way through the Main Titles are a very exciting 2 minutes. To hear it, you would think that something really, really exciting is going on. No. Just very slow moving deliveries going on at The Ace Tomato Company.

2 - Halfway though Off to Spy - A theme so energetic and exciting that it wouldn't be out of place on the vastness of the frontier OR the Steppes.

3 - Russians in the Desert -Mr. Bernstein in Lawrence of Arabia mode. Exquisite.

5 - Escape - Middle eastern tinged action cue.

6 - Road to Russia - wonderful travelogue with a clin d’oeil to The Great Escape.

9 - W.A.M.P. - an ode to American technological wizardy. Awe inspiring moment.

13 - Winners - rousing recap of the great outdoors, Western or Steppes.

And much, much more.

Of course, these highlights just scratch the surface of the artistry and wit of Mr. Elmer Bernstein.

Having gotten 80+ Elmer B. soundtracks over the past 35 years, my No.1 favorite is Summer and Smoke

Tough tough question because he was great at writing memorable themes. But I’d say the score that is consistently good throughout is Sons of Katie Elder. Second choice To Kill a Mockingbird.

Geez .... isn't anybody gonna mention "The Magnificent 7 "???? (But then, just to be different, I'll also throw out "Sweet Smell of Success.")

Five Days One Summer. Also really like Stripes and his scores for episodes of The Big Valley.

Of the roughly 150 DVD movies in my collection I have only one western. It's largely because of Bernstein's score. And, I admit, it has a lot of Star Trek actors in it. smile

TRUE GRIT.

The Magnificent Seven.
It's his first soundtrack I heard, and I like it the most.
