SEASON 1:

British series that began in 1995
As all four episodes of season one (series one, depending on how British you are...) are scored by Anne Dudley, there's no need to mention the name on each episode. Dudley has included two cues on her website: https://www.annedudley.co.uk/kavanagh-qc

This series was suggested by Advise & Consent.

Selected tracks by both composers, was released in 1997 on a CD from Virgin Records, with only under 57 minutes of scoring:
https://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/33349/Kavanagh+Q.C.

Most of the tracks for Dudley appear to be the episode names, indicating which episode the music is from, but not what scenes. Only about twenty-eight minutes from her on the CD (minus her theme music).

Attention readers: I have been using a system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite one day, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that. The system does not mean that I will make a suite or that one has been made, it's simply for my own reference if and when I do decide to.

Highlights:
  • 0:02 in.^
  • 12:12 in.^
  • 16:22 in.^
  • 18:41 in.
  • 29:20 in. Soft warm strings lead cue.^
  • 30:32 in.^
  • 33:25 in. This is probably the cue on the CD titled: The Boat.^
  • 37:19 in.^
  • 49:48 in.^
  • 53:19 in.
  • 1:02:39 in.
  • 1:09:22 in.^
  • 1:22:11 in.^
  • 1:31:40 in.
  • 1:36:51 in. The cue continues and acts as the end credits.^

Dudley provides a somber, moody and sometimes bleak score lead by strings.

The premiere is sort of the anti-Columbo approach, where you're not really sure who is guilty or who is innocent and in the end you have to make your own decision. Considering the contrary evidence presented during the course of this episode, it's no wonder it's not clear.

"You really are a total shit."

When I started watching the series a few years ago, I was so taken by Anne Dudley's music I had to buy it second-hand pricey. One of my favorite acquisitions in recent years - I like the Keane material, love Dudley's work. I was surprised and delighted to find a soundtrack.

The show is just excellent - shows John Thaw in a genuinely different light, and a plausible take on the lives and careers of them bewigged lawyers they've got in the old country! As someone who counts Rumpole of the Bailey as one of the best TV shows ever, this is a terrific change of pace.

Reminds me that I haven't finished the series yet....!

    Thanks Justin.

Anne Dudley wrote a terrific theme and scores for series 1. Her theme was also weaved very deftly in the episode scores.

However, I prefer the John Keane theme, very nimble, varied endlessly through the episode scores. Quality scoring through and through and an excellent series.

    Great show with beautiful music!

Anne Dudley is especially excellent with these string led drama scores. I just adored her work on Poldark. More recently her score for the first series of Signora Volpe was gorgeous! Unfortunately no soundtrack for that yet.

    SEASON 2:

Dudley's theme is no longer used.

    "True Commitment"
    By: John M. Keane

All episode scores from this one onward, are by Keane.

    Highlights:
  • 1:47 in.^

  • 31:11 in.^
  • 35:30 in.^
  • 47:33 in.^
  • 52:53 in.^

For this premiere episode, Jeremy gets his own theme, a melancholy theme on woodwinds with pizzicato strings underneath.

    Continuing SEASON 2:

    "Men of Substance"
    https://ok.ru/video/1664592120493

    Highlights:
  • 0:03 in.
  • 2:18 in. Subdued percussion for the action sequences.
  • 19:21 in. Kind of plucky, maybe a little too whimsical sounding. So used to Dudley's work, I can imagine she would have scored this scene entirely with strings, in a somber cold tone ending in uneasiness.^
  • 35:27 in.
  • 37:20 in.^
  • 52:59 in.
  • 1:02:46 in.
  • 1:05:27 in.^
  • 1:08:50 in.^
  • 1:14:17 in.^

Keane's action music leaves a lot to be desired.
