Wow, quite a collection. I've got the Varèse Sarabande recording with the RSNO, the Varèse Sarabande Deluxe OST, and the (first) Intrada 2CD release.
It's an excellent score for a wonderful movie.

Are you speaking of the score in the film or the soundtrack as in standalone listening experience or both.

Primarily as a stand-alone listening experience. I've watched Pebbles on TV or video several times over the years, not sure I've actually ever seen Max complete in any form. So can't honestly compare how each score works as a part of the whole.

Gotcha. Thank you for taking the time to elaborate.

Amazon Prime had the movie for $4.99 to purchase this weekend so I grabbed it. Admittedly, the picture is not the greatest but if I watch it on the OLED TV, it may view better? Not sure. I intend to buy the blue ray shortly but wanted to watch it sooner than that.

I saw SAND PEBBLES as a roadshow at the old Rivoli Theater in New York. Powerful film, daring at that time for making topical parallels to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam.
I consider it much underrated, overshadowed by later, much more publicized Vietnam movies, like PLATOON and APOCALYPSE NOW. Unlike them, SAND PEBBLES paints a broader picture of issues simmering around our Far East involvement.
SAND PEBBLES is by and large more restrained, even though it builds an atmosphere of dread from the very beginning. Definitely McQueen’s best role. And I still consider it Goldsmith’s best score. I am not among the Goldsmith worshipers here, but I love SAND PEBBLES, and always have.
FYI: if interested, the original roadshow souvenir program can still be found on Ebay relatively inexpensively.
