Wow, quite a collection. I've got the Varèse Sarabande recording with the RSNO, the Varèse Sarabande Deluxe OST, and the (first) Intrada 2CD release. It's an excellent score for a wonderful movie.

I saw SAND PEBBLES as a roadshow at the old Rivoli Theater in New York. Powerful film, daring at that time for making topical parallels to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. I consider it much underrated, overshadowed by later, much more publicized Vietnam movies, like PLATOON and APOCALYPSE NOW. Unlike them, SAND PEBBLES paints a broader picture of issues simmering around our Far East involvement. SAND PEBBLES is by and large more restrained, even though it builds an atmosphere of dread from the very beginning. Definitely McQueen’s best role. And I still consider it Goldsmith’s best score. I am not among the Goldsmith worshipers here, but I love SAND PEBBLES, and always have. FYI: if interested, the original roadshow souvenir program can still be found on Ebay relatively inexpensively.
