I searched but could not find any previous thread about. I guess there is but maybe the search engine and me are not the best friends.

Anyway I just wanna ask is there anyone out there who knows how many copies of the cancelled release of Blood In Blood Out that is out there. I know it is one of if not THE most rare score soundtrack in circulation so does anyone know or have a pretty good guess?

I once heard/read that about 100 or so copies leaked.
I have the unmentionable, and it is fantastic !!!!
Varese should do an expanded Club CD of this one.
A great Conti score

I've managed to bag two copies in the past 20 odd years.
The first I sold on cos I didn't really like it.
Having grown to enjoy the CDR I had made of it, I found another copy on eBay and rebought it.
Both were/are original Varese editions, not boots.

From my days of working at Varese I can confirm this was a real CD they owned.

They didn't release it in the first place.
There was a problem with the license and/or rights, which caused the already produced/pressed copies to be cancelled/recalled.
But some review/promo copies had already been sent out.
I know Varese CDs well enough to know these were legitimate copies.

Robert L. Smith wrote in his 1999 book U.S. SOUNDTRACKS ON CD:

"The CAINE MUTINY of soundtrack CDs, this disc - which contains just over 30 minutes of an aggressive Latin jazz percussive score - was manufactured but never released. Copies do exist, but there are estimated to be fewer than 50 that were released as promotional copies within the industry.

Attempts to confirm the exact problems associated with this CD were not successful, but apparently certain legalities prevented an official release, including an abrupt title change by the production company shortly before the film's release. Originally titled BLOOD IN, BLOOD OUT, the film was renamed to BOUND BY HONOR.

It is generally believed that Varese Sarabande produced an entire run of this CD; at the time of this book's publication, there was no confirmation of the destruction or continued existence of the production run.

Arguably the rarest soundtrack CD that was never offered to the public for sale, copies continue to "leak" out on the market."

Lots of truth in your post Michael. Chris K. from Varese did not want to spend the money to repress the entire CD run with the new title so that was that. No re-pressing with the new title. How many got out, very very very few.

So... did they still have a stash when you worked there? Did you get a copy?

Oh no. No copies. They did have extra artwork for many titles, booklet and back tray but that’s it. They did have a stash of the booklet and back tray, but that’s it. A former employee gave me his copy and I had Bill sign it yrs ago at his house.

Those boxes of extra booklets and back trays are all gone now I’m afraid.

You might wonder why I asked this question and it is because Lukas Kendall had this title in his list for used soundtracks for sale over at his personal site. Even though it was really expensive I thought this is an opportunity I could not resist so I bought it (along with Conti`s Broadcast News and Charles Bernstein`s The Sea Wolf). And I does not even had to consider the potential shipping rate (and the Swedish custom that is definitely not cheap) since I am attending Peter Hackman`s Fans Of Film Music event.

If the only "legality" involved was that the film company didn't want a soundtrack released with an incorrect film title, there would seem to be no reason not to release a BOUND BY HONOR CD. It could probably be expanded beyond 30 minutes and likely would be a big seller.

I managed to find one at Amoeba Music years ago. Complete with the basic liner notes Varese was known for in the 90s
