This is a solid and compelling, if unremarkable, biopic. But I sat there thinking that the score was notably anemic and the film would have been significnatly better had they hired an A-grade composer. So I was shocked to discover, via the end credits, that the composer is Alexandre Desplat.
Desplat can be quite hit and miss, I often find. There are plenty of scores that I love by him, but others that wash away into boredom and disinterest. Maybe the film didn't inspire him that much, or maybe (more likely) the producers didn't want him 'going mad' with that old fashioned, emotive, on-the-nose kind of film music.
This film I think certain to gain award interest when nominations start. The film LEE is excellent. Alexandre Desplat has written a serviceable score for an at times disturbing story and it fits the film very well. and performances are very good especially Kate Winslet as Lee Miller. if she is nominated she should win. The score is so weak in this movie. Did Desplat only get a one hundred $ budget for this?
Winslet's dramatic acting is once again beyond amazing. Beautiful, raw cinematography by my fellow countryman Pawel Edelman. The film itself is nothing special, and I think the strongest limp, apart from the music, is the script.
