Intrada announces a new, 2-CD expansion of James Newton Howard's beloved score to the Walt Disney animated feature Dinosaur (2000). The score was the first of three animated features Howard would score during that time for Disney, followed shortly thereafter by Atlantis and Treasure Planet. Originally released in a generous 51-minute program, this new Intrada release features the full score running some 82 minutes, featuring a wealth of new material previously only heard in the film. One of the absolute highlights is the entire opening sequence, relying primarily on music as there is no dialog. It's well over an hour of soaring themes, aggressive action music, comedic moments—everything you'd expect from a prehistoric dinosaur adventure.
For this new release, Intrada was given access to the complete multi-track sessions stored at Disney, which were remixed by Chris Malone. Douglass Fake assembled the album program (one of the last projects he was able to personally produce before his passing). Fake was a huge fan of Newton Howard's work and was thrilled with the opportunity to revisit this epic work. He would have been proud of the final result.

The film is a groundbreaking blend of traditional animation and computer-generated imagery. Directed by Eric Leighton and Ralph Zondag, the film follows the journey of an iguanodon named Aladar, who is raised by a family of lemurs after being orphaned. As he grows, Aladar and his adoptive family face the challenges of a changing world and struggle to survive against the backdrop of a dramatic asteroid collision. Dinosaur is notable for its innovative visual effects, which combine CGI dinosaurs with live-action backgrounds, creating a visually stunning and immersive prehistoric world.

It looks like they didn't get the rights to include the Kate Bush song.

I saw the film decades ago on VHS (?) The CGI and scenery were impressive in the post Jurassic Park period. So I don't remember much of the score. I suppose the score is ravishingly good as a lot of you are excited. Curiosity is going to get the better of mesmile

Ordering this soon nevertheless.

Because the song was never used in the final film. Kate Bush reworked the song as “Lyra” for THE GOLDEN COMPASS.

The music throughout is magnificent. This opening scene is particularly impressive. Combined with the visuals, I think it's every bit as good as the opening to The Lion King.

Another tour de force is the music combined with the meteor scene. I really love the entire score and can't wait for the complete set, with end credits and alternates. Thanks, Intrada, and feel free to bring out more James Newton Howard and Disney releases.

I can't wait to get this expanded CD edition.
It's easily Top 5 Best Ever by JNH and I really like the film too.
Spectacular CGI and a nice simple plot/story and decent characters, with some solid messaging for kids.
Even our two boys, who normally strike me out when I try to put on some oldies for them (they cried for me to turn off SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES out of sheer boredom) tend to sit still and watch this film.
Hopefully my BSX titles won't delay my order for too long.

I don't have the release myself yet, but I'm hearing complaints from several people who have received their copies that there's a prominent mixing (phasing?) issue with the percussion in all three versions of the End Credits around the 3:30 mark.

I have my copy. IMO, the sound is pretty good overall, but I can confirm there is a very audible phasing or similar editing issue with the percussion of the "Raptor Attack" portion on all three of the End Credits tracks. The cue "Pushing and Shoving" from the unmentionable remains unreleased as well. Nice notes from Grieving. Sadly, no "Tech Talk" from Doug. His insights will be missed.

Wow, I just heard the end credits tracks... the percussion sounds terrible in all 3! Clearly a technical error.

I thought maybe the left and right channels were out of sync but the issue is present in both L/R channels even when isolated. It's like the percussion tracks were accidentally duplicated then moved out of sync, creating out-of-phase distortion.

Without being facetious, does anyone at Intrada listen to their CD masters before sending to print? How could nobody working on the set pick up such a glaring issue, yet fans immediately notice on their first listen?

Doubly disappointing because the rest of the set sounds great, and I figured the music was in safe hands with Chris Malone in charge of the mix.

Whatever that issue is in the end credits cues isn't noticeable to me.

What a fantastic release. Poignant to think that Doug didn't live to see it.

It's very noticeable unfortunately! Sounds like the percussion was accidently duplicated, creating this weird double-up effect. It's present in all three versions of the end credits as well.. Hopefully someone at Intrada can take a look at it because it's definitely not supposed to sound like that. As for the missing "Pushing and Shoving", maybe they intentionally left it out, but it's still a bummer.

Yeah it's a pretty glaring issue, I don't know how these things are not noticed at Intrada.

You must be listening on a potato because anyone with working ears can hear the issue, it's that distracting. Just compare the end credits percussion with the same section in Raptors / Aladar Meets the Herd and you'll notice immediately.

This is clearly a mastering/mixing mistake. Posters on other forums have already identified what the likely issue is, and it should be easily fixable.

As for it being a 'fantastic release', the fact 3 tracks are ruined with technical errors and music from the bootleg isn't even included puts a serious dent in my excitement for the album. I certainly won't be ordering until the audio issues have been resolved.
