Expected to ship the week of September 27, 2024.

Sudden Death (1995) was the second of two Peter Hyams films starring “the muscles from Brussels,” Jean-Claude Van Damme. After 1994’s Timecop, Sudden Death was patterned on the durable “Die Hard in a…” premise: here, the contained space is Pittsburgh Civic Arena, wired to explode by terrorists at the conclusion of game seven of the Stanley Cup finals.

Sudden Death was received as an above-average action film, with strong action and suspense as well as an emotional element: fire marshal Darren McCord (Van Damme) must rescue his daughter from the terrorists, even as he fights and kills their underlings—and saves a game-winning goal on the ice.

Peter Hyams’ directorial vision has always been to score action with percussion and raw affect, not artifice. Sudden Death was the first of his three collaborations with John Debney (followed by The Relic and End of Days), receiving a pulse-pounding, orchestral tour de force from the young composer. “John Debney understood every emotion and where they needed to be amplified,” Hyams says today. “He’s a wonderful talent, and I adored working with him.”

Sudden Death was released by Varèse Sarabande in a 9-track, half-hour program at the time of the film. This Deluxe Edition expands the program to 28 tracks and 64 minutes, with Hyams and Debney newly interviewed by Daniel Schweiger for the liner notes.

I don’t recall the score other than I remember liking it, so I’ll have to check out my OST.

Nice to see an expansion of this one! I've enjoyed what I could hear on the original album a lot over the years - can't wait to discover more.

I recently discovered this score... About a year ago when I first watched the film. I almost always check who the composer is when I'm about to watch a film. To be honest, I didn't have high hopes before watching it, since Debney's music isn't that interesting to me (but I have to admit his End of Days score is pretty good!) When I started watching the film, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a dynamic score with cool and catchy themes. In this case, for me, the orchestra really rules! smile
I'll buy the digital download. But I think Varese is a bit overpriced prices for digital releases compared to other labels...
Obviously this is one of the landmark and sought-after scores, and I'm glad along with everyone else that it got a decent release.

The original album is great and has a great musical flow. For me it has been years since I have watched the film, can anybody tell me if we are still missing some important cues? Or are the 38 of extra music more to have the complete score and is this more underscore? Some help is welcome.

Great question! I hope to hear some opinions once they get their CD. I played the 9 track (30 min) OST and its enjoyable but didn't blow me away. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars in my playlist. I wonder if the addional music will take it from a good soundtrack to a great soundtrack. BTW, it really sounds like a 90's Jerry Goldsmith score.

Interesting, I actually thought it sounded like a 90's James Newton Howard score when I listened to the old album the other day. It's not a bad score or anything but it doesn't really have it’s own voice.

It's most definitely John Debney's love letter to Howard's THE FUGITIVE.

I've always enjoyed the original album presentations of both Sudden Death and The Other, so I didn't hesitate to super size this sonic meal deal.

Which was itself a love letter to Goldsmith, particular in the action department.

Love Letter? More like a temp track.

John Debney in the footsteps of James Newton Howard... himself in Jerry Goldsmith mode?

This sounds perfect to me and fully meets my expectations, no probem.

Remember THE PACKAGE and OUTBREAK action music?
Pure JNH allright but nevertheless heavily Goldsmith influenced.

I actually don't know where Hollywood film music would have been for the last 35 years without such solid heritage from Goldsmith and Williams.

Maybe we would have gotten even more Media Ventures stuff...

Except JNH and Goldsmith are far better than Debney in every sense.

Sudden Death is a good action score, but when you put against something like The Fugitive, pales in everything, god, even Outbreak is better.

Debney is the most go-composer, yep, accomplish in what you expect, but nothing more.

Sure, JNH's 90s action scoring may have been inspired by Goldsmith. But..., you'd never mistake The Fugitive, Waterworld or Outbreak for a Jerry Goldsmith score. You can clearly hear JNH's own voice in those scores.

The same can't be said for Sudden Death (or actually almost any John Debney score), which just sounds like JNH-lite
