Expected to ship the week of September 27, 2024.

One of Jerry Goldsmith’s most unusual horror projects comes to CD in complete form courtesy Varèse Sarabande’s Deluxe Edition. The Other (1972) used bucolic 1935 Connecticut to tell a truly disturbing story of twin boys with dangerous supernatural powers. Directed by Robert Mulligan (To a Kill Mockingbird) from a script and book by Tom Tryon, and costarring Uta Hagan and Diana Muldaur, the film has earned a cult reputation as a unique and affecting piece of 1970s horror.

Jerry Goldsmith tackled The Other amongst a string of oddball film and television projects during the changing tastes of the early ’70s. At the peak of his creative powers, he managed to combine the polar opposites of The Other’s tones into a perfect unity: beautiful music for the film’s nostalgic setting and childhood intimacy (with a gorgeous main theme), and dark strains for the unspeakable horrors of the story’s revelations.

Long admired as one of Goldsmith’s most offbeat horror scores—made even more mysterious by the fact that cues were dropped from the finished film—The Other was released in an extended suite by Varèse Sarabande alongside The Mephisto Waltz in 1997. This Deluxe Edition features the complete stereo score in a new audio restoration by Chris Malone with liner notes by Tim Greiving.

Years ago I was at a bar and this movie happened to be playing. Without sound, so I couldn't hear the score, but it's such an odd movie, and made more odd juxtaposed against sports on other TVs at the bar, that when I looked it up I was shocked to see Mulligan and Goldsmith's names.

Anyway, this one's intriguing on reputation alone.

I didn't buy The Mephisto Waltz/The Other CD (well, soundtracks were coming out thick & fast back then, you could afford to be choosy), but I'll try a few tracks & well may buy this. I do love 60s/70s Goldsmith. And...it's 20th Century Fox, so maybe the Flint soundtracks are a'coming.

I'm really happy with this release.
For two reasons - first of all, I really enjoy this score, from time I listened suite (thanks Peter, for including this one as part of Little Box of Horrors!)
And second - this release of 20th Century Fox title probably means, that Varese still can release their in-perpetuity titles even if Fox is now Disney. And that's great, as they have not just 2 Flint's scores, but also some great Herrmann's too (which were part of that expensive box set). So now I really hope that Varese will bring us more great Golden & Silver Age titles.

"complete stereo score in a new audio restoration by Chris Malone with liner notes by Tim Greiving" is AMAZING news.

I can't wait to hear this new master.

Near the top of my list would be David Raksin's magnum opus Forever Amber, which did get a Twilight Time Blu-ray isolated score track, but much more music was recorded for the film than was on that track. (I think either the film was cut down, or a great deal of score was cut out of it.)

But yeah, more Herrmann reissues (the fixed Ghost and Mrs. Muir as a standalone release!) and more Goldsmith expansions (not just the two Flint scores but The Mephisto Waltz!) ... the possibilities are quite tantalizing now that Varese has returned to the Fox catalogue after an eight year hiatus!

Anyways, back to THIS release: I think they picked the absolute best thing to start with, because the only commercial album release for this score previously was so very unsatisfying!

As this film moves from suspense to out-and-out horror, it really grabs you by the stones.

A Goldsmith score only helps.

The Other CD release is fantastic news. And a terrific movie too (ripped off not long ago by an overrated European film).

I think of it as the flipside of a Robert Mulligan classic, To Kill a Mockingbird.

(and any film that has Diana Muldaur has already won me over)

I only wish I felt comfortable ordering it directly from the Varese site, but given recent experiences I'll order it elsewhere.

I was tempted by the offer of both THE OTHER and SUDDEN DEATH so I got both for £27.00 with £4.99 P&P. As a single order THE OTHER is £16.00 + P&P. Cheers

Amazing. Thank you, Varese.

The notorious film score critic Page Cook wrote that this was the second-best score of 1972.

100% This. FOREVER AMBER is one of my favorite scores and I would love an expansion. I realize the chances are beyond remote.

So excited about this release, such a gem from his early 70's output!

Wow - really did not expect this would happen! It's another big year for Goldsmith in the 70's!

Loved the book more than the movie (as with Goldman's Magic, the big reveal works better in the book than the movie). But both are striking, and the music is ideal. Well, duh.

Whoa.... whoa... whoa... whoa...

This I must buy; I don't even have a chance to not buy this. One of my most hoped for restorations. What were the sources? (I'll buy this no matter what.)
