It feels like, oh...at least 20 minutes...since we last had a Top/Fave 5/10 Thread around here and, inspired by some Michael Kamen scores popping into my ears this morning, I started doing just that and... Three that immediately crash the List are... ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN (the straining/flubbing brass almost adds to its quirk and charm at times), BAND OF BROTHERS (up there with the BEST EVER TV scoring heard) and THE DEAD ZONE (for me, THE ONE that started it all). After that...probably ROBIN HOOD PRINCE OF THIEVES for its sheer exuberance and obvious love for the subject matter from Kamen AND that ICONIC Love Theme. I find some of his action scores (the DIE HARD'S and LETHAL WEAPON'S amongst them) quite brilliant within the films, but not quite as successful as standalone listens, despite LOTS of individual excellence. Picking Number 5 is tough. It's between HIGHLANDER, HUDSON HAWK & THREE MUSKETEERS, I think, but I can't decide which one (I'll have another think while yooz crack on). And you don't need to include his SAX* or GUITAR concerto's, cos they're NOT film scores and we already know they're brilliant. * Indeed, the Sax Concerto may be my ALL IN favourite piece by him ever.

I think my fav is Don Juan DeMarco. Coz it's bloody lovely n melodic n lush. So 2- 5 can't decide/ can't be arsed.

No one has mentioned LAST ACTION HERO yet, which I really like. So glad LaLa brought out a complete version. I REALLY want a complete THREE MUSKETEERS. The classical sound of it is wonderful, and fits the period very well. BARON MUNCHAUSEN, of course, along with ROBIN HOOD, and X-MEN complete my list.

Great. I've been enjoying a Kamen deep-dive all through 2024. I'm currently listening to, and really enjoying, the LLL Last Action Hero. I'd say it's too soon for it to make such a tricky top five, as a convenient way to make room for others, but it is winning me over pretty quick. Now I gotta wonder, do I wanna put Venom in there? The Venom release started this deep-dive for me. It led me to pick up the LLL X-Men, which really got me this time around. Venom has not fallen by the wayside though, I love it, even surprisingly so, as it is predominantly cold and sparse in its sound. Highlander is my number one holy grail, and my fav main theme of all time. Lethal Weapon has got to be my fav OST presentation. Die Hard is a pillar in my score appreciation, and the 3cd a pillar in my collection. But I can't leave out Dead Zone, it's too gorgeous. Band of Brothers too. Then there's The Last Boy Scout, my release of the year when LLL came out with it, beating A.I. in my estimation at the time. Munchausen has been confined to a compromised OST presentation for so long it feels like an easy one to cut. Final decision: postponed. I gotta get back to work!

For me it's, Highlander Robin Hood Dead Zone Three Musketeers Back To Gaya If Hudson Hawk was ever expanded, I might choose that.

My favorite Michael Kamen score is: The Dead Zone (David Cronenberg, 1983) The other four: Robin Hood (Kevin Reynolds, 1991) Don Juan De Marco (Jeremy Leven, 1994) The Winter Guest (Alan Rickman, 1997) XXXX... thinking... it might be BRAZIL...
