This 1998 TV movie is so obscure, I couldn't even find plot descriptions on IMDB or Wikipedia. And the Music Box soundtrack release page is gone. And I have no liner notes to consult, only digital files. And there are no previous threads on it. But I THINK it's about a missionary in some foreign lands?

As such, it makes sense that it's basically a twin brother to THE MISSION, more than a decade later. The native choir, the staccato, indigenous rhythms, the flutes -- although perhaps slightly more upbeat, and not as sacral and gutwrenching as his most famous score. Either way, it's an absolutely lovely score.

I’m fascinated by your foray into obscure Morricone projects. Don’t stop!

Cheers, TG! I have a few more coming up, but I didn't really want to step on Henry's Morricone thread project, dead as it may seem at the present time. I've skipped posting about a few obscurities already, from the 60s, 70s and 80s, in this chronological walkthrough I'm having. Also, this board has so many hardcore Morricone connaiseurs, with huge, near-complete collections, I'm surprised some of these didn't have a thread already.

When I was buying every Morricone release I could find (& afford) on the Internet, this was one of the earlier purchases … to me it’s always been Mission - part II smile

Yeah, I wonder if it was just intuitive given the subject matter of the film (what I THINK is the subject matter of the film, anyway), or if he was asked to emulate THE MISSION by the director? Temp track love and all that? Knowing Morricone's personality, I find the latter hard to believe, but you never know.

Thank you! Ran it through Google Translate, as my Italian leaves a lot to be desired:

"The young Toni leaves his family and his fiancée to become a priest and go on a mission in Brazil. Here he finds a dramatic reality: despite the existence of an agrarian reform that assigns land to farmers, the landowners refuse to hand it over, threatening the people. The Barbosa family, who takes possession of their land, is exterminated by corrupt policemen in the pay of a large landowner. The only survivor is a child, Sandino, whom Toni protects by sending him on a distant mission, knowing that if the little boy testifies at the trial, his life will be at risk."

I've omitted the last bit, as it contains spoilers. Not that people are able to find this film anyway.

Yeah it always had the similar elements, choir n sound. But by the time the mid 90s had come around and into the 2000s Ennio had changed his style again and his scores were smoother and slicker and understated - like il papa buono, padre pio, malena, vatel and a few others - and casa bruciata has those same elements n style. It's difficult to pinpoint in words, I guess you gotta listen to a few more of his 90s/early 2000s output to hear what I mean.

That's my favourite Morricone era. I like many of his 60s-70s stuff but his later output - I would say, from the late '80s - is much closer to my heart.

I played this today , as aresult of all this yap. It's decent enough but I think it's 'the Mission light'. Maybe some was director rejected from the mission.
