Ever since the new reissue of "Goldfinger" by John Barry came out I have been revisiting these good ol' Bond scores and I have decided to sometime assemble my 2003 CD of DAF to the originally planned LP assembly of "Diamonds Are Forever." Is this possible to do with a couple of audio editing tricks on Audacity? The original album of "Diamonds Are Forever" was criticized for not having enough John Barry material and I prefer listening to playlists with a great track listing experience. By the way I find it odd that the originally planned LP was scrapped as the label should have respected the composer's choice of selection for the album. Let me know how I can proceed with this project of mine and I would appreciate some time stamps with the songs too. Thank you for reading.

The original album was ALL John Barry material.

I think the criticism you had in mind is that, like the Henry Mancini albums on RCA, it over-emphasised the source music and lounge tracks over the dramatic score.

That said, I love the original LP configuration. I've been able to love it more since the complete score** came out.

(** Yes, yes, I know it's missing the 5-second sting at the end of the Willard Whyte fake phone call sequence.)

I'm stil hopeful that this, alongside Thunderball, YOLT, and OHMSS, get done again, this time fully complete, with shorter tracks rather than long suites, in film sequence, and also presenting the original LP programs.

Such a presentation would be redundant for Goldfinger and Moonraker, but not for those scores.

To your question, "Can I recreate the original LP with Audacity edits?"

I think the answer is yes, except you might find it difficult to remove the added bars on the song, because they blend in.

But you might be as well to buy the original CD release of the LP program for $4 on eBay.

I don't have the timings to hand, but if no one replies before I have a chance to compile an answer, I will.

Cheers

By the way, just for fun, I created my own 40-miniute playlist, with book-ended A and B sides to create an album experience, but one that is a more exciting presentation of the score. I'm rather fond of it. I'll dig the playlist out.

Cheers

This, by the way, is how to sequence the originally intended LP, thanks to a post by AGM back in 2021:

Here is the original planned sequence for the Diamonds Are Forever LP based on the notes Lukas Kendall provided in a back issue of FSM.

Side A:
1. Diamonds Are Forever - Main Title (Single Version) [1M4]
2. Elevator Fight - Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd [3M2+2M1]
3. The Whyte House [4M3]
4. Moon Buggy Chase (Original) - Roof of the Whyte House [6M3+7M2]
5. Tiffany Case [2M5]
6. Death At the Whyte House [8M1]
7. Circus, Circus [5M2]

Side B:
1. Diamonds Are Forever (Bond and Tiffany) [12M3]
2. Bond Smells a Rat [8M2+8M3]
3. Q's Trick [9M4]
4. Bond Meets Bambi and Thumper (Revised) [9M2A]
5. Airport Source [3M4]
6. 007 and Counting [10M1]
7. To Hell With Blofeld [12M1]

(Again, you will probably need to split the 2003 CD tracks into their individual slates.)

Cheers

This was my 'fantasy' album:

I set myself a challenge of creating the BEST program of Diamonds music I could, according to the following rules. It was a fun game.

1. The title song must lead.
2. It must be designed as a Side 1, Side 2 program.
3. The sides must be of similar length.
4. It must include a broad range of music and not just focus on action music.
5. It must include at least one lounge instrumental of the theme.
6. The program must not exceed 40 minutes.

What I came up with was this, and I'm really happy with it. I think it plays really well.

Side 1
Diamonds Are Forever (2:52)
Mr. Wint And Mr. Kidd (2:31)
Elevator Fight (1:06)
Circus, Circus (2:50)
Moon Buggy Ride—Lean Over! (3:19)
Plenty and Tiffany (2:06)
Diamonds Are Forever—Source Instrumental (3:45)

Side 2
James Bond is Back—Manhunt! (3:11)
007 And Counting (3:31)
Bambi And Thumper—Penthouse Fight! (3:09)
Q's Trick (2:26)
Tiffany Runs For It—Following Metz (2:54)
To Hell With Blofeld (1:38)
Bond and Tiffany—Fight on the QE2 (3:39)

Side 1 length: 18:29
Side 2 length: 20:28
Total album length: 38:57

To create this, you'll probably need track numbers and cropping instructions although you could probably figure it out for yourself.

Cheers

I, too, love the original album, even with its missing music.

The two DAF instrumentals are great examples of Barry late-night jazz. as is the sublime "Tiffany Case," my favorite cue on the album.

That said, I'm glad to have it all.

I knew the original EMI/Manhattan (Capitol) compact disc releases of Bond soundtracks, like many other new-to-CD reissues, were just the repurposed LP masters and avoided them.

In 2003, my patience paid off. If it weren't for this board, I would never have known the 2003 Capitol releases of Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds are Forever were incomplete.

Upcoming releases or no, I'm extremely pleased with all those albums now and enjoy them infinitely more because I waited until the time was just right to get them.

...by the way, if you tack onto the beginning of the previous list From Russia with Love and Goldfinger, it's all the Bond Score anyone has ever or will ever need.

It's the highest quality stretch of Bond scoring and will never be equaled, unless some other scoring savant comes along and attaches themselves to EON Productions, and EON completely overhauls their approach and returns to making movies for dating couples, not for middle aged multiple-birth mothers.

You see the difference I'm getting at?

where ? there are room in between to split - i only remember the monkey source cirkus music that could be hard to split but anything else turned out fine when I, back in the days, were editing the music on my minidisc

I appreciate all the information about the soundtrack you have provided Stephen. Providing all those cues really helps but would I have to crossfade these tracks or should I just edit them together? Audio editing is a skill and I know I will probably have to fade in the beginning of some of the tracks for the originally planned assembly. Heck, the original album that was released in 1971 misses the "Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd" and "Elevator Fight" themes. "Death at the Whyte House" is my favorite track off this score and it is the only part on the original LP that features the "Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd" theme briefly. However, I am not here to criticize that original LP as it can be nostalgic and magical to listen to.

Interesting suggestions.

I remember suggesting a similar thing with the vinyl OHMSS but can't find it now.
Though I realise to criticize such a soundtrack is tantamount to sacrilege nowadays.

I can't find it now but I think I dropped the pointless (IMO) piano version of WHATTITW for Gumbold's Safe.

And more controversially DYHCTAG AND Ski Chase for Escape From Piz Gloria,

My thinking was that Escape is more dynamic and faster whilst DYKHCTAG is really background music. Though I think it would have been MORE popular if it then appeared on the 2003 expanded version.

Thanks for the reminder on this! I remember being fascinated to learn that there was an earlier version prepared of the DAD album - and so frustrated that it would have included the elevator fight music!!

DAD is one of my top 3 Bond scores and I love every note of it, yet am still compelled to attempt constructing this "alternate" original album version...

These guidelines for crafting "fantasy" LP programs is pretty close to what I follow for even non-Bond scores! The "Whittling" thread is where I'll post most about this, but it can definitely be fun to follow these guidelines and hear the results.

So I basically went with the original album program from 1971 from that old CD which sounds good. Even though a lot of the tracks are source material cues, the listening experience feels laid back which is a positive thing. It’s a unique LP program as the other Bond scores rely a lot on the action cues where this feels like pleasant background music at times.

I hope for the same thing. Goldfinger may not have any combined-out-of-sequence tracks, but Moonraker does. "Bond Arrives in Rio & Boat Chase" and "Cable Car & Snake Fight" immediately come to mind.
