Also known as TWO ENGLISH GIRLS, this romantic 1971 film by Francois Truffaut doesn't seem to have a previous thread. I've never seen it, plot is described thusly: "At the beginning of the 20th century, Claude Roc, a young middle-class Frenchman, befriends Anne, an Englishwoman. While spending time in England with Anne’s family, Claude falls in love with her sister Muriel, but both families lay down a year-long separation without contact before they may marry."

BUT....this is the kind of Delerue I have the hots for. Slow, bittersweet, pastoral, deeply emotional. I thought it only had a vinyl release, but checking Discogs, there appears to be a CD reissue as well, from years ago. Well worth checking out, if you haven't already.

Sorry to hear that Thor. Nothing that Jerry patented trombones cant cure.

Goldsmith, schmoldsmith....I'll get to him in due time. Goldsmith and Delerue are ranked pretty evenly with me, both right outside the top 10.

Beautiful music.
I only have this CD edition of it...

...with 3 tracks from TEGOTC, together with other Delerue/Truffaut collabs, but I love it.

Georges Delerue gave us so many gorgeous scores to treasure. He had an enormous gift for melody.

I'd forgotten there were several pain in the arse dialogue tracks towards the end!

Thanks to this thread last week, which reminded me that I had 3 tracks from this score (about 8 minutes) on the Truffaut compilation I noted above, I noticed a V-Good Cond' copy of the Universal France CD (c/w JULES et JIM), which features about 28 minutes of the score.
It was on auction at eBay for £8.99 (with Free Postage) and as I was the only bidder, it SOLD to that crazy bloke in the corner.
So...thanks Thor...I'll probably spin it in work on Monday (busy weekend) and report back.

Day, are those dialogue tracks on the Universal France edition I just bought? (not that it bothers me THAT much, I don't mind the odd bit of dialogue or sound FX on certain albums).

No, the few dialogue tracks have been removed for the Universal CD. Therefore LES DEUX ANGLAISES is about 10 minutes shorter than on the old Hortensia CD from the early 90s.

Yep. Mine is the Hortensia edition.

It's interesting to read (in the booklet/notes of the Universal France release) that Antoine Duhamel wrote a deliberately provocative/polarising score for BED & BOARD, in the subconscious hope that Truffaut would not want to work with him again (which worked, as Truffaut re-teamed with Delerue for TWO ENGLISH GIRLS ON THE CONTINENT right after).

When this CD* kicked in, I thought "is this a James Bond score???"
There was all that missing circus music (NOT by John Barry).
I only knew JULES et JIM from the various excerpts I have on Delerue compilation albums and none of them featured Circus Music!
It's not a score I love. Pleasant, yes, but light and disposable overall.
The real treat here is TWO ENGLISH GIRLS ON THE CONTINENT.
Absolutely sumptuous music from Georges Delerue, in that style all of his own.
It just takes you on a journey of whimsy and beauty.
So delicate...heart-breaking...in its simplicity and vibe.
And no whittle needed here...EVERY cue from TWO GIRLS is indispensable.
He sure was 'the French' John Barry.
What a way to start the week. (Thanks again, Thor).

Cool, thanks for the report, Kev.

I agree with you that JULES ET JIM is a tough listen at times. That circus music (kinda Rota/Fellini) goes on my nerves. But it has those gorgeous, impressionistic "Brouillard" tracks, perfectly capturing the melancholy of fog. So there's that.

But yes - definitely, LES DEUX ANGLAISES is on a whole other level, and more "classic" Delerue.
