You were not off with the association to TOMATS.

Regular Williams orchestrator John Neufeld played clarinet on this score

Well, true, it's Hemingway, and since it is a reflective work there are actually a number of references to other works of Hemingway, including as you mentioned to THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA.
Still, it's a different story and not basically a re-telling or variation of the story of THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA.

The first time I saw this, I was sure (incorrectly) it was a different take on adapting the novel To Have and Have Not from that book's titular picture, with its shoreline setting, a gruff boat owner with a heavy drinking friend, and the plot surrounding a need to transport refugees. I once did a movie night where I ran Islands through the end of the section with his sons as a lead-in, then put on To Have and Have Not. It worked well, even though the source for each isn't the 1937 novel, whose follow-up rework was The Breaking Point, a decent movie with a remarkable final shot.

Was there ever a digital release of the FSM version from La-Land Land back in 2016 or is this a hoax (or bootleg)?

Hoax. Or a mistake. The only version on digital seems to be that re-recording.

I can't actually play the "La-La Land" edition of ISANDS IN THE STREAM on Spotify, it's greyed out, but the timings match more the original tracks recording, not the re-recording. Not sure what that is and how it got there and why the label would be "La-La Land". In Qobuz, you can usually click on the label and go directly to the label, but that doesn't seem to be how Spotify works.

As I sit listening to the remastered version of ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, which is one of my top 5 favorite Goldsmith scores, I cannot help but reflect on Doug's legacy, and how proud he must have been over this effort. Similar to the remaster of THE WIND AND THE LION, it is like hearing a brand new score!

Can't wait to hear OUT OF AFRICA remastered. And the new recording of THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, also two of my favorites.

Thanks, Doug. You are remembered!

thanks Scott,

as Island is one of my favs too, cn you offer some inside, why you think its like hearing a brand new score ?
i hesitate to buy it again, due to Intrada saying themselves, they ve done some minor tweaks.

Anyone else made an A-> B comparison ?

You hear instruments and tonal clarity not as well heard in the FSM edition. Much sharper sound. The music also seems to pack a greater punch in the action cues. I don't think you will be disappointed with the remaster if you are a scholarly aficionado on the older version.
