Has anyone heard of or attended one of these concerts that are being performed in many locations around the world? I attended one on Saturday night and the theme was the music of Queen. It was surprisingly good. I believe it has a lot to do with the venue and of the course the instrumental artists performing. They use local musicians which is a wonderful opportunity for local talent. I would love to hear from anyone who has attended one of these concerts and what you thought.

I went to one of Hans Zimmer music a few years ago in Phoenix. It was pretty cool.

Yes indeed! My girlfriend and I have attended several, including one this past weekend that was music from both LOTR and Game of Thrones. It was held in an old church near me in downtown LA. They're really great, it's fascinating to hear these themes interpreted for quartets and quintets.

I've been to a couple as well, at a train museum (?!?!) In Nor Cal.

One classical, string quartet, nice enough.

The other, a Halloween themed gig, quite fun, but i was just picking apart arrangements, choices, tempi....the bloody audience coerced to GHOSTBUSTERS!, or snap along to Mizzy's ADDAMS.....

Lil Tommy Servo's noted concert (it's in the show, MST3K, NOT a diss, love ya TS) is coming here soon, we're totally going.

A nice night out, recommended, especially if its a film score concert!

I've seen them pop up here and there (especially Zimmer ones), but haven't gone. The combination of relatively steep price and cheeseball aesthetics, makes it all a bit too speculative for my taste. A bit like a tourist trap. If someone gave me a ticket, I might give it a chance at some point.

They have quite a lot of them, in glorious surroundings (St Georges Hall, Stanley Park Glass House, the bombed-out Church*) around Liverpool.
There's been Vivaldi, Williams, Zimmer, Christmas, Queen...countless others.
We attended our first one this year (a Movie Themes programme by String Quartet) which was very enjoyable.
It's more about the atmosphere and ambience than anything else, but it was very relaxing and calming.
And the surroundings of the St George's Hall were ornate and beautiful (which was recently Gotham in the last BATMAN movie).

* much nicer and evocative than it sounds wink

Wow, these sound like wonderful experiences. Tom, I am thoroughly jealous that you got to hear GOT and LOTR. I am going to hope we have one in our area sometime. The comments about Halloween themed performances by Goblin sound very cool. The one at the Zoo would have thrilled me. I agree with Hurdy that the ambience being relaxing and calming.

Thor, I think you might want to give it a chance. It may depend on where you live as to whether it's a tourist trap. I certainly don't live in a tourist type area of New England and they are quite popular here. You might enjoy the ambience and the talented musicians they feature. Our tickets began at $25.00.

I forgot to mention that ours was in a large, beautiful church and the string quartet play some operatic pieces in between the Queen pieces. Apparently they were works that had inspired some of Queen's song writing. The performers were actually very personable and funny. I am looking for another one to attend but most of the holiday themed performances are sold out.

I went to a Hans Zimmer one in Helsinki today. The programme was as follows (They only announced the film titles but this is what I gathered from memory):

Pirates of the Caribbean: He’s a Pirate
Pirates of the Caribbean: Suite (Jack Sparrow / The Kraken / Davy Jones / The Medallion Calls / He’s a Pirate)
Gladiator: Now We Are Free
The Last Samurai: Red Warrior
Dune: Suite (Herald of the Change / My Road Leads into the Desert)
Top Gun Maverick: Top Gun Anthem
Sherlock Holmes: Discombobulate
The Lion King: This Land
The Dark Knight: Like a Dog Chasing Cars
Batman v Superman: Is She With You?
Dunkirk: Supermarine
Inception: Suite (Dream Is Collapsing / Time)

Encore 1 - Interstellar: Suite (Day One / Cornfield Chase)
Encore 2 - Man of Steel: Flight

The string quartet was excellent (local Bålder Quartet). They actually played almost 10 minutes over the planned duration because of applause. One of the arrangements was clearly above the rest, namely The Last Samurai, which was worth the whole ticket price. It did the original piece justice, full of emotion and power. Other enjoyable arrangements were Interstellar, The Lion King, Gladiator and Wonder Woman Theme. As you can see, there were some questionable selections for a romantic candlelight concert. The most blaring ones of course Dunkirk, the one cue they chose from The Dark Knight (though nicely played) and Dune with some alien-sounding playing techniques that made me feel uneasy. But the overall experience was definitely positive and I would attend one again.

Eastern, that must have been wonderful. I too would have loved the selection from The Last Samurai. It must have been amazing with the candlelight. Thanks for sharing your experience.
