Oh Wow, now this one was totally unexpected!! I feel like I was fixated on Moonraker and just got T boned by a Rinky Dink Panther.
I'm surprised too, but I saw the possibility, that the first "Pink Panther"- soundtrack will be released someday. We know, that Mancini made a lot of copies from his music, so I think the tapes had been at least partly delivered by the Mancini estate, I guess. Nevertheless I've never thought, that it will come so soon. Let's hope for a complete "A Shot In The Dark" and maybe "The Return Of The Pink Panther".
Yes, the last few weeks have been simply amazing! I had a feeling that Quartet would be doing a Mancini release, but I never would have thought what happened yesterday. I checked facebook before noon and suddenly there was a new posting announcing the "Breakfast at Tiffany's" LP set. Initial thought - no, not again & on LP - I really don't need that. Then I went to the website and saw "The Molly Maguires" - nice, but do I need another version of it? Next: "Darling Lili" - now this is truly amazing! Unreleased 1960s Mancini! Wow! And then: "The Pink Panther" - I couldn't believe my eyes. There's been a rumour that the Mancini estate has tapes of "A shot in the dark," but I never thought that we'd ever see a release of the original recordings of "The Pink Panther."
Many thanks to all the people involved in these outstanding releases! "The Godfather, Pt. 2," "Sisters," "The Man With The Golden Gun," "Moonraker," "Out of Africa," "The Pink Panther," "Darling Lili" and a new recording of "The Old Man and the Sea" - all within a few weeks.
Not to sound ungrateful, but this new teaming of Sony and MGM/UA certainly opens the door for other Mancini releases of that sort. The remaining "Pink Panther" titles - and FINALLY the original tracks of "The Party."
But this was not released this year. This is from the original LP. I went to soundtrackcollector.com and I don’t see any release this year of murders row. Maybe the poster meant it as a descriptive term.
Murderer's Row is part of the 16 CD Lalo Schifrin set put out by Universal France to be released this month. Amazon is accepting orders. My copy has not yet shipped.

So Universal France released more than just samples.
What a year ! THE PINK PANTHER, MOONRAKER, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE and i am sure i forgot other titles.
And MURDERER ROW !
A few years ago this might have been considered as a usual batch of the year. Now in 2024 I guess it's the best we could ever get. I personally am very excited of all these releases.
It's a pretty odd situation at the moment: things like the James Bond scores or the Hitchcock/Universal scores (or even the Mancini scores which were covered by RCA albums) were considered a no-go for a long time because they were either part of a major movie legacy or required agreement of multiple licensors. Nowadays, it's harder to get comparatively "minor" scores released due to the dwindling market - the locked doors at Warner's also being a major barrier.
Is it odd that this score was recorded in mono in 1963? I'm not well schooled in exactly when stereo became the mainstay for film score recordings but my first reaction is that this is an anomaly for this time period. Would love some history on this for those in the know...

Not necessarily. I guess the studio masters had been recorded in stereo, but the copies the Mancini Estate has, are in mono. I suppose, the tapes are partially or even complete delivered by Mancini's heirs. It seems, it was common practice in the 60's, recording the masters in stereo, but backup copies (latest example: BEAT Records' "For A Few Dollars More") or private copies are only in mono (Mancini's rejected score for "Frenzy" for example). But be that as it may, I'm very happy about that release. I don't care whether mono or stereo. I love that score and for me it's the bullseye for this year.

The press release says "originally recorded in mono".

In his book "Did They Mention the Music?", in the chapter called Moon River, Henry Mancini states “The quality of sound recording in movie and television scoring was poor”.
He goes on to say “While film and television scores were being recorded in mono, stereo, which for years had been in the experimental stage, was coming into the general marketplace”.
He also says “The Music from “Peter Gun” was one of the first of the stereo albums, which may have contributed to its success. After that I continued to re-record my scores in stereo for album release”.
Sound guru Chris Malone on Pink Panther Soundtrack, apologies if posted already
Incredible video, and the best type of trailer to promote a new album release. The significance of this release is on full showcase in the video, and I will definitely pick this up at some point soon!
