LLLCD 1646

Music by Trevor Jones

Limited edition of 5000 Units

La-La Land Records and The Jim Henson Company present an expanded 3-CD soundtrack set of renowned composer Trevor Jones’ (CLIFFHANGER) original motion picture score to the 1982 landmark fantasy feature film THE DARK CRYSTAL, directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz.

THE DARK CRYSTAL was a boundary-exploding feat of puppetry and cinema, re-inventing what had been previously thought possible and resulting in a breathtaking achievement of immersive world-building that still retains its power and wonder to this day. A vital part of this endeavor’s success is composer Trevor Jones’ outstanding original music score – a tremendous accomplishment that has also stood the test of time.

Now, for the first time ever, this deluxe 3-CD release, conceived, assembled and produced by Trevor Jones himself, features the bounty of music the maestro composed for the initial, longer cut of THE DARK CRYSTAL, in its original intended order. Copies of the master tapes recorded at CTS Wembley were digitized along with the composer’s entire body of work, which is now archived at the University of Leeds. Jones personally reassembled and remastered the audio at Abbey Road for this special presentation.

Produced by Trevor Jones and Tim Greiving, and mastered by Andrew Walter under the composer’s sole supervision and approval, this release includes a wealth of previously unreleased music within its newly Expanded Score Soundtrack presentation, which is spread across two discs, while the original 1982 soundtrack program is featured on Disc 3. Limited to 5000 units, this deluxe set includes a 32-page booklet containing exclusive, in-depth liner notes by Greiving (featuring new interviews with Trevor Jones and Frank Oz) and rare artwork and photos from the Henson Archive. The sharp art design is by Dan Goldwasser.

Wild, unexpected, huge.
The big miss in my collection. I had been hoping for a re-release, and had ruled out the chances of getting something like this.

Him being involved with this fine release and the quote below holds promise for the future, I think.

Copies of the master tapes recorded at CTS Wembley were digitized along with the composer’s entire body of work, which is now archived at the University of Leeds.

Brilliant news! The sound quality on the previous ‘isolated score’ type release wasn’t too bad, but touch wood this will be far better and allow it to shine in all its majestic glory, even though it’s evidently mastered from a copy of the mastertapes, rather than the masters themselves? Should still sound fab.

Edit : Samples sounds amazing! As an aside, wonder if we’ll ever see get to see this longer version of Dark Crystal that was scored…

Fingers crossed for the film version tracks from Labyrinth at some point too, and Excalibur…

Great to see that after years of Trevor Jones allegedly being uncooperative with expansions of his scores he actively participated in this. It is the biggest surprise from this batch and one of his best scores ever!

Noted from the total timing that it could fit on a 2-CD set, but probably the album had to be released on a separated CD. Good that the album is included as it was a good representation of the score.

Hoping we see more from Trevor (Excalibur, Arachnophobia...), an amazing composer with some fantastic works (specially when he is not obliged to mimic temp tracks).

One of the top ten best scores of the eighties...which is hard to top being one of the strongest decade in filmmusic and especially in the fantasy genre...with KRULL,CONAN 1 ,2..EXCALIBUR..CLASH OF THE TITANS ...

I think what was good about it was that there was 'something' different about it. And from an unexpected source.

Release of the year, for me, and that not likely to change in the next 350 days, so good is this music.

Echoing others to say it’s great to see that Mr Jones actively participated in preparing this, and hoping that can lead to more of his music being released.

Thankfully you said "allegedly" uncooperative less you feel the wrath of Skiffy!

Huge release!!! We've waited so long for this. The main theme is so cool and haunting at the same time. Now I can retire the crappy unmentionable. Just surprised this isn't an Intrada release.

Wow, did not see this one coming! Never preordered anything faster. The original album is still one of my favorites of all time. If this new release improves upon the audio quality of the expanded material in the slightest, it will be well worth it. Plus, new material never before released. Very exciting.

SOOO … reading that announcement, for years and years MV and Roger told us they wanted to do Jones titles, but he would not play ball, no matter how much love they tried to show him, but it looks now like he's changed his mind. Please let this be the case!
