Decca Music France in collaboration with CAM Sugar will apparently soon release an expanded/complete edition of this Francois De Roubaix score from 1972 on LP and CD. I suppose there might be a few people here on this board who will be interested in it.

However, it makes me wonder that on the "Ecoutez le cinéma" French Facebook website really nobody seems to recognize the two sound clips from LA SCOUMOUNE Lerouge & Co. have posted there. The first one may be a bit difficult to recognize, but the second one can be heard in the film itself so that there is little doubt about the upcoming release:

I heard about it some time ago but was told it would be a two LP reissue only. If it turns out to be wrong, I'd be very much happy since LA SCOUMOUNE is the only FDR CD I didn't buy so far (and I just don't remember why !). There will be at least something to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this legendary composer's passing. Various books dedicated to his career and unique personality are also in the pipeline.

Where did you heard about various books ?

There are a few more that could be expanded, although de Roubaix wrote fairly short scores for major films. There is not that much that was left from Universal compilations. Maybe someday I could do a summary. For B movies things are quite different.

Good news all around I'd say.

There's many titles and music missing.

In a case like this one - when you have a cooperation between CAM Sugar in Italy and Decca in France - there are not that many choices as all the material has to come from the CAM Sugar catalogue. And they have the rights and the material for only three De Roubaix titles: LA SCOUMOUNE, LES ANGES and LE SAUT DE L´ANGE.
Besides, it seems that only if there is a participiation of CAM Sugar an LP or CD still gets released nowadays. Ecoutez le cinéma on their own only do digital online releases of individual scores (see for example LE SUCRE or L´ADOLESCENTE by Sarde during the last few weeks).

Thankfully, Quartet released LES ANGES and LE SAUT DE L´ANGE. Kudos to Music Box and Universal France for releasing so many De Roubaix gems, especially LE MONDE ÉLECTRONIQUE DE FRANÇOIS DE ROUBAIX. Still hoping for a definitive release of DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS, but very thankful for what we got.

I wonder why they never did a big one for him like they did for Morricone ? For once it would be perfect. I think...

They did a 5 LP box set, with only a couple of tracks unreleased. Of course a 20 CD box set would be nice, but certainly that is not expected from Universal anymore. Also 20 CD would be close to the full archives.

Slint, I don't think his output represents only ca 20 CD. There's certainly material to fill in much more CDs (easily more than 100) but the problem is that he scored so many short movies, industrial movies, commercials, etc, probably spread over countless publishers. So you can't reasonably sell this kind of unknown stuff on CD nowadays anymore. Regarding the scores that still deserve a full release, I would mention these titles off the top of my head : JEFF, LA PEAU DE TORPEDO, FAR FROM DALLAS, POUR UN SOURIRE, LES NOVICES and for the TV LA REDEVANCE DU FANTOME (directed by Robert Enrico), LES CHEVALIERS DU CIEL (2d series), ENQUETEURS ASSOCIES or LE SOLEIL SE LEVE A L'EST. Even other TV scores like QUE FERAIT DONC FABER? or LES SESTERAIN OU LE MIROIR 2000 I mentioned in another thread could each fill a CD. So believe me, FDR wrote a heck of a lot of music during his short life.

That would be pretty impressive for a guy who only lived to be 36 years old. A Morricone-like stamina on that guy, in his short lifespan.

Yes, Gilles Loison's impressive book is a perfect way to realize how large FDR's output is. Also, it must be said that some tapes have been lost (or erased by FDR himself !) over the years.

Regarding the 5 LP set released by Universal France back in 2021, I highly recommend it. By the way, I got recently the same format dedicated to Michel Magne (subtitled 'Le Prince d'Hérouville', issued in 2023) and was delighted to discover a few unreleased tracks in its contents (in particular the theme for the TV show INTERNEIGE, of which I had no idea Magne actually wrote it, and two excerpts from the theater play LE MALADE IMAGINAIRE).

There seem to be years he did 9-10 films, so that explains why his output is so big despite his short life and career. I only have two of his most famous ones myself, LES AVENTURIERS and LE SAMOURAI, but am always on the lookout for more. I'll have a go at this LA SCOUMOUNE thing.

Yes, go for it. LA SCOUMOUNE is a score FDR did entirely alone at home thanks to the rerecording process. Otherwise, there are many CDs you'd probably enjoy, such as the one gathering Robert Enrico scores (LES GRANDES GUEULES / HO! / LES CAÏDS / LE VIEUX FUSIL) or L'HOMME ORCHESTRE (a kind of musical), both released by Universal France. I also recommend a.o. the Dreyfus CD combining the two scores he wrote for the TV series LES SECRETS DE LA MER ROUGE. Since FDR used to travel a lot and to bring back instruments, you'll realize how inventive he was. And if you're into his unique feature of the synth, just try to find the already mentioned two volumes of LE MONDE ELECTRONIQUE DE FDR (including great scores such as LA MER EST GRANDE, L'ANTARCTIQUE and MORT D'UN GUIDE, Universal France) or A VOUS DE JOUER MILORD (MBR). And of course, the other two CAM scores mentioned by Stefan (LE SAUT DE L'ANGE and LES ANGES), as released by Quartet, are really worth it. These are just a few examples.

Thanks, Laurent. As with all the Italian composers that everyone seemingly knows every nook and cranny about, I have a lot to discover about composers like De Roubaix as well.
