Lotsa music in this one!

Clark writes: Intrada's new release of Jerry Goldsmith’s original film tracks for Islands in the Stream gave us the opportunity to not only talk about a score the composer regarded as a personal favorite, but also to share memories of Intrada’s beloved founder, Douglass Fake. On this very special Soundtrack Spotlight, the complete Odyssey team — Jens, Yavar, David, and Clark — is joined by Intrada producer Roger Feigelson, shipping manager Jeff Johnson, media consultant Joe Sikoryak, liner notes writer Frank DeWald, and mastering engineer Chris Malone. First you’ll hear a discussion of the new album, including details on the sound improvements this release makes over the original FSM presentation, the integrity of Goldsmith’s work as a complete composition, Intrada’s long history with this score, and more. Following this, the group takes some time to offer personal memories of Doug, who meant a great deal to all of us in different ways. In addition, at the program’s conclusion you'll hear a special bonus: a pair of never-before-released excerpts of past conversations with Doug, teasing the then-unreleased Intrada presentations of Goldsmith’s MacArthur and John Williams’s The Patriot. This is a meaningful one, and we hope you’ll enjoy it.

Whoa..this is good stuff!!

Thanks Amer. Give it a listen; listen to Yavar's contention that it is close to "a symphony," and set aside any need to see the film first. It's such good music, and the full album is such a ... well, such good music!

Agreed. I already have the rerecording and the FSM Edition. Will mull over it. The music is timeless.

I got really emotional listening to how David did the Doug Fake memorial section, in particular -- some of his finest work as editor in over half a decade of the podcast. Have you made it that far in your listen yet?

I listened to the whole show yesterday and really enjoyed it. What a wonderful tribute to a great man.

What I really like about your podcast is how I always come away appreciating a score that I've loved for years even more, thanks to all the background trivia and insights you and your guests bring to the discussion. And the positive, loveable-nerd-vibe you guys exude is just a pleasure to listen to.

I thank you for those kind words. Especially enjoyed, wonderful, positive, loveable and pleasure.

I put even above informative the goal of making a comfortable space for our guests, to be hosts and a show with which people are pleased to spend some of their time, and as long as we sometimes go on in each release, to be good company for listeners. A year or so ago it hit me how many of our guests have stayed longer during a recording, sometimes much longer, than they'd originally offered as their limits, and how many have come back to join us again, and I think that made me feel better about the show than anything else had to date.

Seriously, thank you!

You're welcome!

I think the list of guests on your show through the years speaks for itself.

Let's not forget the important aspect of preservation you guys are doing. Two of your regulars, Mike Ross-Trevor and Douglass Fake have already passed. Thanks to your podcast so many of their memories are now saved for posterity. I have no doubt that future generations will study Goldsmith as one of the great composers of the 20th century and your podcast will be an invaluable research asset.

I'm nearly all the way through this podcast. It made me listen to ISLANDS IN THE STREAM again, twice in a row, after a period of... maybe a few years. Mine is the FSM CD. I do "have" the LP re-recording "back in the Auld Country", but that probably counts as not having it at all. I don't think I'll get the new iteration, simply because on a mundane level one only has so much money, and on a more "spiritual" level, one has an increasingly decreasing (tee hee) time left on this planet.

I haven't finished listening to the Doug Fake memories bit yet. My small contribution is that I was backpacking around the USA in the summer of 1986 and stayed in San Fran at a cheap hostel rented by a friendly Chinese lady. On consulting my map in the morning, I realised that I was only ten minutes walk from Vallejo Street. So there I was at ten in the morning, Doug Fake at the counter playing over and over again the (then new) release of his baby, ISLANDS IN THE STREAM. He was almost in tears playing that first track again and again. I remember how he went "Wow" when the guitar comes in. Unfortunately I couldn't buy the LP due to the circumstances, but it's something I'll never forget. He seemed quite diffident, very unassuming. Lovely guy I imagine.

That's the time I was looking through Randall Larson's book (I don't recall which), and I asked Doug about "Gil Mell". "Oh, Gil MellAY". He kind of shrugged and said that he didn't have much of a following. Then he put on the first track of ISLANDS IN THE STREAM again.

Great Doug memory, Graham -- thanks for sharing it!

Of course Intrada did some great Melle releases later on, so I'm glad Doug tapped into that Melle following for a bit, anyway.

I played this after a long time and was just swept away by the music as if they were the waves of the ocean lapping on the beach. Just gorgeous. The type of music one must play in for sake of tranquility.

I'm pretty content with my FSM set but may consider upgrading it later on.

I think you'll be glad if you do, especially with your setup. It's no bottlecap.
