Today, march 12 2025, marks Georges Delerue 100th anniversary.

A very special thought to the maestro !

Happy 100th to one of my favourite film composers (right outside my top 10 he is, among the runner-ups), even though my collection is probably very meager compared to many of you. I count 21 items at the present time, but among them some true gems -- like the Universal France 6CD box from years ago. Alas, the glue of the trays inside came loose the moment I received it, but I can live with that.

As I'm currently going through my entire collection (some 3000 albums) in alphabetical order, I recently went through all of my Delerues in sequence. That was a perhaps a bit too much, because as much as I love his bittersweet stylings, there are only so many you can listen to in a row before it gets kinda "samey". But when you're in the mood for a Delerue or two, very few things can beat that feeling. If I'm in a funk, for example, I get picked up by his warm, bucolic compositions. (I don't like his suspense music very much, so I tend to steer clear of most of that).

Also not too long ago, probably around the time I was at "Delerue" in the walkthrough, I finally watched the humourous documentary on the composer, DON'T SHOOT THE COMPOSER (1966) by Ken Russell. Fun stuff! I know there are a couple of more serious documentaries too, that I should probably check out one of these days.

What's my favourite score of his? Hmmm, hard to say. It's a toss-up between AGNES OF GOD and BLACK ROBE. If someone put a gun to my head, maybe BLACK ROBE.

Happy birthday to one of the greatest we've ever had.

Curious who actually will care and release ANYTHING this year = after previous centennaries were mostly neglected.

The 2019 "Last Metro" Delerue Music Box album (gift from my dear friend Judy the Hutt, CD I guess now OOP) is a magnificent presentation of some of Georges' most stirring scores. I've come to love his score to "The Woman Next Door," which is also an underrated, powerful film:

"Jules et Jim" (not on the Music Box album) is perhaps is my all time favorite Delerue. It is still as wild, romantic, haunting, and achingly sad as it was when the film was first released more than six decades ago.

There's a lovely suite on the 1997 Nonesuch Delerue compilation:

Vive Georges!

I love the creations that Delerue had composed over the years. Unfortunately many of the younger generation couldn’t care less. Too bad !

I also highly recommend that MBR set. The Woman Next Door is so moody and mysterious. It's fantastic!

Delerue seemed to have an endless supply of beautiful melodies. I would like to share two of his scores that have not been mentioned yet:

A Summer Story (1988)

Rich In Love (1993) (his last score!)

My favorite European based composer was Georges Delerue. He was the creator of the word which means so much to me… MELODY !
His compositions worked equally beautifully in American stories as well as European stories. He worked both sides of the Atlantic to great acclaim.

His wonderful melodies and orchestrations enhanced some of the most mundane films…
