I didn't pick up the Lifeforce/ Mancini release (Intrada version) when it came out, so I was about to order it. Then I spotted the Michael Kamen version.

I'm a little confused with the differences, so wondered if someone could enlighten me.

Does each release contain different music, or is there a lot of crossover? Note that I'm not really interested in 'Original Album Presentation' offerings on 2CD sets. I just want the most complete version of the soundtrack. I'd be happy to grab them both, but that might be overkill if there isn't a huge difference between the two.

Actually, while I'm here...what about the Intrada Invasion of the Body Snatchers? I have the original Perseverance CD, and wondered how much of an upgrade the Intrada version is.

Thanks!

The two Intrada LIFEFORCE albums are totally different: one contains all of Mancini's music; the other contains all of Michael Kamen's music (Kamen was called in to add music and rescore sections after the film underwent re-edits and Mancini was unavailable to come back.)

Intrada's INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS contains more music than the Perseverance; in fact, it's complete, I believe, whereas the Perseverance was just the original, truncated LP with a composer interview added at the end of the program.

There are basically four different LIFEFORCE releases.

1. The original soundtrack album.
This one was pubished by Varèse Sarabande and Milan and contains a selection of Mancini's music. (I don't have any of these.) This one was also released on vinyl.

2. Then the BSX release:
This contains the entire Henry Mancini score in excellent sound, as well as a good portion of the music Kamen wrote at the last minute of the movie. Good album.

3. The Intrada Mancini release
This contains the entire Henry Mancini score in excellent sound (about the same as BSX), but none of the Michael Kamen music. Instead, it contains additionally a presentation of the original soundtrack album, plus a lot of alternates and stingers.

4. The Intrada Michael Kamen release
This contains all of the electronic and orchestral music Michael Kamen wrote for LIFEFORCE, including the selections that were included on the BSX, plus more.

So there is obvious overlap between 2 and 3 and 2 and 4, but no overlap between 3 and 4.

The 2006 BSX release does include the original soundtrack album, too ... using the track sequences and titles from the earlier VS LP and CD releases, rather than those from the Milan releases ... confusing smile

Yes, the original soundtrack album was just a selection of cues from the film score, so all Mancini film score releases contain the original soundtrack album.

I got a CD by Polydor Japan. Is that the same album as the Varese/Milan?

Presumably so. The Original Soundtrack release had these tracks:

The Lifeforce Theme
The Discovery: Part 1 - Space Walk
The Discovery: Part 2 - Into The Alien Craft
The Discovery: Part 3 - Exploration
The Discovery: Part 4 - Sleeping Vampires
Evil Visitation
Carlson's Story
The Girl In The Raincoat
The Web Of Destiny: Part 1
The Web Of Destiny: Part 2
The Web Of Destiny: Part 3

Those were the Tracks in the LP, on the Varèse, and on the Milan, so I suppose the Polydor Japan should have the same?

Wasn't there some source damage on one of the Web of Destiny tracks on the BSX?

Yes. The Intrada release includes this track "undamaged" and IMO has superior sound over the BSX which is more hissy - not sure if different sources (earlier generation tapes?) were used for the Intrada vs. the older BSX.

The Kamen rescore has some good orchestral tracks but, as it was more a filler score to accomodate new edits for the shorter US release (not a complete score) it is more fragmented and not a full musical work - as most of the rescore, specially the orchestral tracks, covers only the first part of the movie.
More a curiousity than a coherent film score. The BSX release included some of the synth Kamen tracks (but none of his 14 min. orchestral tracks, which the Intrada includes) - there's lots of samples at Intrada of the Kamen score so you can listen and decide if you like it.

But, if you'll get only one album of Lifeforce, the intrada release with the complete original (and superior) Mancini score is the one I'd recommend.

Best and most comprehensive response.
