Happy 94th Birthday to a fascinating human being... "The One and Only" William Shatner... He has been a huge part of my life for what seems like FOREVER... Star Trek is my #1 favorite TV show, and ALWAYS has been... Captain Kirk is one of my all-tme favorite fictional characters ever created, and was magnificently brought to life by Mr. Shatner, who is one of my favorite actors... I've always said, the two MOST iconic "pop culture" actors to come out of the the 1960's were Sean Connery as James Bond 007 and William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk...These guys were the textbook definition of the cool, rugged, stalwart "Action Hero"... My parents had told me that I had ALWAYS watched Star Trek, even as a toddler, and I do have fuzzy memories of watching the syndicated reruns on TV as far back as the VERY EARLY 1970's... Kirk VS the Gorn, and Kirk destroying the Doomsday Machine, are vivid memories of my "TV past" that are burned into every fiber of my being! I recall that our local TV stations often had Star Trek Marathons, some of which went on for 12 HOURS... and I always watched EVERY minute of them! I also watched the mid-70's animated TV series, which Shatner voiced... I collected all the Mego action figures https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=175iqqIl7ho and built the AMT model kits... My younger brother and I would always play "Star Trek" in the backyard... He'd be Mr. Spock, and I did "my best" to imitate Shatner's voice and mannerisms as Captain Kirk... We even had those Star Trek Communicators, which were just cheap hand-held walkie-talkies! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bgOBUWuf34 BTW, after ALL these years, I STILL can't get the sound of that damned communicator's blaring, headache-inducing, "Twin-Warp Sound" alarm noise out of my head... Yes, "Good times!" I will forever remember the absolute THRILL of seeing Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the theatre in 1979 when I was 13-yrs-old... It was one of the greatest, most exhilarating movie-going experiences of my young life... It is one of the greatest sci-fi films EVER made ("Hell, it is one of the greatest films ever made of ANY KIND... Period!")... From the visionary brilliance and guidance of the great Gene Roddenberry, to the impeccable direction of Robert Wise, to the jaw-dropping special effects of Douglas Trumbull and John Dykstra, to the beautiful and majestic music score of Jerry Goldsmith, to... of course... the always reliable performances of Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner... It succeeds on every level... BTW: Shatner was just great, expertly portraying Kirk's internal struggle as he contemplates whether or not accepting the rank of Admiral was in fact the best thing for him to do... Shatner nailed it. Yes, ST: TMP is a true CLASSIC... It is a MASTERPIECE. I also have to mention the 1963 Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet"... "WOW!" That episode, directed by Richard Donner, about a passenger on an airliner who is the only one who notices a hideous creature on the wing trying to sabotage the aircraft during flight, is one of my all-time favorite moments in ALL of television... Shatner delivered a deliciously manic performance! And WHO can EVER forget Shatner's "unique interpretation" of Elton John's song Rocket Man?..."Ha!"... I mean, WTF was THAT? Still... "Absolute GOLD!" So, Happy 94th ("That's amazing!") B-Day to you, sir... You've given me literally decades of joy, and continue to do so... Thank you... May you continue to (as your Vulcan 1st Officer always says) "Live long and Prosper"... YOUR Human Adventure is just beginning. There is simply no denying that William Shatner, while adorably "hammy," is a genuinely funny man. He has a subtle wit and humbling intelligence that is deeply ingrained in his artistic persona, soul, and utterly charming demeanor.
