In the mid-seventies Barry said in an interview he destroys any copies he can find of him singing. I thought that was hyperbole until I heard a radio interview from the nineties. I think it was some station in long Island. The interviewer told Barry he was going to play the record and Barry said he'd destroy it if he did. The interviewer began playing it and JB got up and smashed the record.

I didn't know and now after watching a few minutes of that, I wish I didn't know again.

Agreed. Sounds like Randy Newman doing an Elvis impression.

I'm glad he stuck to his day job and let other people sing to his incredible music.

Yeah this is pretty old news. About 65 years old in fact! smile

He could not sing. I hate it everytime this comes up. So did he.

This was right at the beginning of his career. Well before his career as a film composer started.

Cheers

LOL! That's a very precise observation and description.

Might be old news to some, but this was a first to me. Funny.

He's no Patrick Doyle, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting based on the comments here. smile

I'm glad he moved on to something else, though.

It is on many CDs, starting with OOP Ready When You Are, J.B. Also on several compilations, including the one called The More Things Change.

The vocal by Nina Van Pallandt has not been released on CD.

No, several songs can be found on "The EMI Years, Vol. 1" - later re-issued as disk 1 in "The Bee's Knees."

Quincy Jones sang on a few of his A&M albums starting with Smackwater Jack. He wasn't terribly good or bad, so why bother?

One of the songs he sings on the above album is "What's Going On?" His vocals are okay and thankfully don't get in the way of his stunning arrangement. As catchy as it gets, and his settings for the brief but remarkable solos show why he was one of the best arrangers ever.

I'm not sure, if you are aware, but John Barry (re-)recorded some of his stuff for Columbia and Polydor - the Columbia recordings being the earlier ones and are usually closer to the original recordings.

Of the titles mentioned above, only "The More Things Change" and "Themependium" contain stuff licensed from a variety of labels (including UMG). The other three titles only contain material from the Sony catalog (so, zero duplication with the Polydor set) - "John Barry plays is Greatest Movie Hits" is even a straight re-issue of a Columbia/CBS LP.

Yes i know and its not easy to get the titles you want and trying to get a cd with the less duplicate titles.

John Barry – The Emi Years Volume One 1957-1960. That CD has several songs that Barry sang on. It has the ones in the video. There are several different CD's out with Barry singing. He wasn't the greatest singer but I have heard worse. I am not sure if anyone else in the JB seven sang besides JB ? Anyone know ? I really like the first song on The EMI years Volume One. "Let's Have A Wonderful Time".

Just played it (well, a minute anyway) and he's not doing too well, is he? Just a thought that unless you've got the tonsils for it, you always come a cropper trying to emulate Elvis's singing style. Could've just sang in his normal voice. Anyhoo, the lad done good further down the line, as we all know.
