It occurred to me the other day that it's now been five months, which breaks their usual pattern of a pair roughly every few months.

Could be that they're just having much more trouble than usual with approvals. I've wondered whether the labels in general are just relying on approvals happening in time for that monthly (or whatever) slot, or whether they have to build up a small backlog of ready-to-go titles to have a smooth release slate.

No doubt they're doubling-down on getting their deluxe edition of Brainstorm just the right side of perfection.

Well, one can dream, right?

Hey Varese, if you are listening, how about some Patrick Doyle Deluxe Editions? I am thinking in particular Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, and even though it wasn't originally a Varese release, Henry V (still my favourite Doyle score, and so good that I'm sure the DE would sell well for you!). Those and many other Doyle score's you've released over the years deserve expansions, I'd buy many of them! But I nevertheless look forward to whatever you tackle next in the CD Club.

I would love this too! Just FYI, if I recall correctly it was revealed years ago that the only Doyle score Varese actually controls in perpetuity is Carlito's Way. I'm pretty sure all the other Doyle albums they released without getting perpetuity rights for whatever reason (maybe the studios involved?) which is why La-La Land Records was able to give us that fantastic expansion of Dead Again, for example.

Getting the missing quarter hour of music from Carlito's Way is definitely one of my Varese grails at this point though. Bizarrely, the great music for the film scene pictured on the back of the original Varese CD was not on that album!

I'm honestly really shocked that one of the other labels such as Quartet or Intrada hasn't expanded Henry V yet.

Oh wow I didn't know that about the Doyle scores on Varese. I remember when Dead Again came out on LLL (great album BTW MV and team at LLL!) I was a little surprised, but of course if there's one thing we soundtrack fans have learned it's to never assume anything. I figured Varese must own the rights to Exit to Eden, Needful Things, Nim's Island, etc, but if they don't I hope some of the other labels can tackle some Doyle (Henry V at the very least!).

I know there's not a ton of missing music from Carlito's Way, but every time I watch the film I notice 3 or 4 cues that I really enjoy that I'd love to have on CD. I'd also like the proper track indexing of Grand Central Station, to not have the first minute of the final track on the CD tacked on to the end, that always seems jarringly awful to me, not have that whole cue just on it's own track (maybe it was just a mastering mistake?). Expanded Carlito's Way is definitely one of my grails (and I have noticed you mention it once or twice over the years Yavar, so hopefully this can happen for us one day).

Hey Varese, if you are listening...

Well, I gotta say, that's fair.

I would be very happy to see the deluxe editions of Predator 2, The Abyss and Enemy Mine reissued in the announced Encore series - the only interesting CD Club titles for me that I don't own. As long as they don't mess with them, don't "improve" anything. Let them be the same as those created under Robert Townson's supervision.

Erick Labson did some poor Deluxe Edition mastering under Robert Townson's time at Varese. It would be really nice to get an Encore of Peggy Sue Got Married: The Deluxe Edition, for example.

I thought Predator 2 was actually one that a lot of people thought the mastering could be improved on, in particular.

Still hoping for deluxe Medicine Man and Hudson Hawk.

These would be great! And I also hope for expansions of The Secret Garden and Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, since Varese seems to be able to expand Warner Bros. titles still, if they have perpetuity rights...

Seconded with regard to Predator 2. And Robocop 2 while they're at it, because I missed both of them last time. Selfish I know, but....

Also: any chance of City Hall without whatever issues plagued it last time?

It was a manufacturing issue which affected a good portion of the first pressing. Varese already sent out replacement copies to purchasers, which fixed the problem (since the problem was not in the master). And like half a year after the initial unexpectedly fast sell-out, they *did* actually press another 500 copies, which are still in stock!

No issues reported with this in-stock pressing of City Hall: The Deluxe Edition; order and enjoy!

They put out that great Deluxe Edition of The Other last year without waiting for any tie-in, so I doubt it! wink

But speaking of recent Goldsmith releases that sold out without warning and really need an Encore… that great release sold out before we could even release our Soundtrack Spotlight episode! We’ve been holding it back until they re-press The Other, but I’m starting to lose hope of that happening. Maybe we should just release it since people can at least still purchase a download (or stream it).
